Book Gusu District, not SIP, for your first Suzhou visit
The Industrial Park around Jinji Lake has newer hotels and a modern skyline. It also has nothing walkable without a taxi. Gusu District puts you walking distance from the classical gardens, Pingjiang Road canal strip, and Shantang Street.
Expect to pay $50-100/night more in Gusu than equivalent SIP hotels. The extra buys you 10-minute walks to the Humble Administrator's Garden and the ability to wander Pingjiang Road in the evening without hailing a ride.
Visit the gardens before 9am or accept the crowds
The Humble Administrator's Garden sees 3,000-5,000 visitors daily in peak months. Before 9am the paths are nearly empty and photography is possible without strangers in every shot. Gates open at 7:30am.
Most Gusu District hotels are within 15 minutes walk of at least two major garden entrances. SIP hotels require 25 minutes of transport to reach that first gate.
Tongli beats Zhouzhuang for overnight stays
Zhouzhuang is the most photographed water town near Suzhou and it shows in visitor numbers. Tongli sees fewer tour buses, has an equally good canal network, and the overnight experience after 5pm when day-trippers leave is genuinely peaceful.
Book inside the old town gates at Tongli Boutique Guesthouse rather than in the suburbs. The difference between arriving before crowds and leaving with them is worth the extra planning.
Use Metro Line 1 as your base route through old Suzhou
Line 1 connects Suzhou Railway Station through the old city center to SIP. Lindun Road station is the best stop for the Humble Administrator's Garden, a 5-minute walk. Shantang Street station covers Tiger Hill.
A metro day pass costs 15 RMB and covers unlimited rides. Didi is cheaper than hotel taxis for longer trips and works reliably across Suzhou.
Silk shopping: where to buy and where to skip
The Suzhou Silk Museum shop on Renmin Road sells certified products at fair prices. A quality silk scarf costs 200-600 RMB. Avoid vendors near garden entrances or along Shantang Street tourist strip without checking quality first.
The Silk Alley market near South Gate has better prices but requires bargaining. Pure silk should feel slightly cool to the touch and burn cleanly without a plastic smell.
Budget hotels in Gusu outperform budget hotels in SIP
Suzhou Mingtown Hostel on Pingjiang Road charges $45-70/night and places you inside the canal district. Comparable-price SIP options sit in office areas with no street life.
Mid-range Gusu hotels like Garden Hotel or Crowne Plaza position you equally for both sightseeing and the Guanqian Street dining area, all within 20 minutes on foot.

SIP is Suzhou's new city built around Jinji Lake. Hotels here are newer, larger, and better equipped than Old City properties. The Angsana sits on the north shore with lake views. The DoubleTree is near the convention center.
The trade-off is distance from the gardens, 25-35 minutes each way by metro or taxi. The SIP dining scene has improved significantly and the lakefront promenade is worth an evening walk.

Tongli is 20 kilometers southeast of Suzhou and the best water town for an overnight stay. After day-trip crowds leave by 5pm, the canal streets empty out completely. The Tongli Boutique Guesthouse has rooms hanging over the water.
Entry costs 100 RMB. Restaurants are concentrated along the main canal street. Three private gardens within Tongli are included in the ticket price.
