Stay inside the old city walls for your first Xi'an visit
Hotels inside the ancient walls put you walking distance from the Muslim Quarter, Bell Tower, Drum Tower, and South Gate. The walk from most Bell Tower hotels to the Muslim Quarter entrance takes under 10 minutes.
Outside the walls, even nearby areas require transport for every sightseeing trip. Mid-range options inside the walls from $105-200/night are worth the premium over suburban equivalents.
Visit the Terracotta Warriors in the morning, not the afternoon
Tour groups arrive in force from 9:30am and Pit 1 becomes crowded by 10am. Book the earliest entry slot and arrive before 9am. From Bell Tower hotels, a Didi to the metro costs 15 RMB. Metro Line 9 takes 40 minutes to the museum.
Total cost each way is about 25 RMB by metro and far more reliable than tourist buses from the train station area.
Go to the Muslim Quarter at 8am, not at noon
The Great Mosque at the end of Huajue Lane is one of the finest Islamic sites in China and is far better before 9am. Entry costs 25 RMB and the Tang Dynasty architecture mixed with Islamic design is remarkable.
Food stalls on Beiyuanmen Street open at 7am. Morning visits mean half the crowd density and no queuing for biang biang noodles.
Qujiang is for Tang heritage, not city center sightseeing
Qujiang has the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Tang Paradise, and the Qujiang Museum. But it sits 6-8 kilometers south of the Bell Tower area. The Wyndham Xi'an South and Crowne Plaza are both here.
If your priority is the Muslim Quarter and Terracotta Warriors, staying in Qujiang adds 20-30 minutes to every trip north. Stay there only if Tang Dynasty culture is your main focus.
Xiaozhai district has the best local eating scene
Around Xiaozhai metro station (Line 3) sits the densest concentration of local Xi'an restaurants at honest prices. Biang biang noodles from 14 RMB. Lamb paomo (bread crumbled into lamb soup) costs 25-35 RMB at proper local canteens.
The Crowne Plaza Xi'an in Xiaozhai has a rooftop pool with pagoda views and is 20 minutes walk to the Qujiang sites.
High-Tech Zone hotels are for business only
The High-Tech Development Zone has conference centers and multinational offices. Grand Park Xi'an on Gaoxin Road serves this market well. The metro takes 20 minutes to reach the old city.
For any leisure visitor, this is not the right base. The area has chain restaurants and malls but none of the atmosphere that makes Xi'an interesting.

Summer (June-August)
Xi'an summers are hot. The Terracotta Warriors outdoor sections become uncomfortable by 10am. Museums and indoor sites are manageable. The Muslim Quarter is extremely crowded on summer weekends from noon. Start every outdoor activity before 8:30am.
Autumn (September-November)
September and October have Xi'an's best weather. National Holiday week (October 1-7) brings enormous crowds and higher prices. Late October and November are quieter with cool, dry days ideal for the city wall ride and outdoor sites.
Winter (December-February)
Cold but not extreme. The Terracotta Warriors museum is far less crowded in winter. Indoor sites like Shaanxi History Museum are worth extended visits. Muslim Quarter food stalls stay open and the lamb paomo soup is particularly good in cold weather.

Shaanxi History Museum requires advance booking for free entry
No entry fee but daily visitor limit. Same-day tickets run out by 9am during peak season. Book online through the museum's official website the day before, or arrive before 8:30am opening. The Tang Dynasty gallery is the best single room in the museum.
Use Metro Line 2 for Bell Tower and train station connections
Line 2 stops at Beidajie (near North Gate), Bell Tower, Yongningmen (South Gate), and connects to Xi'an North high-speed rail station. A single trip costs 2-6 RMB. Didi from Bell Tower to the Terracotta Warriors costs about 90 RMB and avoids the metro transfer.
Skip the Tang Dynasty dinner show
Most visitors report it is overpriced at 300-400 RMB and geared toward domestic group tourism. Spend the money instead on a proper dinner in Xiaozhai district and see the Big Wild Goose Pagoda fountain show at 8:30pm, which is free. The city wall lit up at night is also worth seeing from outside.
