Start on Calle 8 in Leticia with breakfast at a Colombian bakery. Walk 10 minutes south across the unmarked border into Tabatinga, Brazil. The transition is subtle. Signs switch to Portuguese, prices change to reais, and the beer gets colder.
Take a $2 boat from the Tabatinga dock across the Amazon to Santa Rosa, Peru. The Peruvian side is a small village with a few shops and restaurants. Have ceviche for lunch ($5) and take the boat back by 3 PM.
No passport stamps needed for day crossings between all three. But carry your passport anyway. Colombian immigration officers occasionally ask for documents near the Tabatinga border. The whole loop takes 5 to 6 hours at a relaxed pace.
Jungle lodge vs. downtown hotel: which is right for you
Downtown hotels on Calle 8 are convenient, affordable ($45 to $180/night), and air-conditioned. You can walk to restaurants, the market, and the port. But you are in a small Colombian town, not the jungle. Wildlife sightings are limited to birds in Parque Santander.
Jungle lodges (Heliconia, Waira Selva, Amazon B&B) put you in the forest. Expect canoe rides at dawn, night walks with guides, and howler monkeys as your alarm clock. But they cost $260 to $480/night and require 45 minutes to 2 hours by boat to reach.
The smart play is to split your trip. Do 2 nights downtown for the town, market, and Tabatinga crossing. Then 2 nights at a jungle lodge for the real Amazon experience. This gives you both worlds without committing entirely to one.
Wildlife spotting guide: what to see and when
Pink river dolphins (botos) are the headline animal. Best seen at Lago Tarapoto near Puerto Narino between June and October when water levels drop and dolphins concentrate in smaller areas. Go at dawn for the highest chance.
Howler monkeys are everywhere in the canopy, loudest at 5 AM. Squirrel monkeys travel in groups of 30+ and are common at Isla de los Micos. Caiman spotting happens on night boat tours ($40) along tributaries near Leticia.
Macaws, toucans, and harpy eagles are present but hard to find without a knowledgeable guide. Hire Ticuna indigenous guides through the tourism office on Calle 8 ($50/day). They know nesting sites and feeding patterns that general guides miss.
Navigating the Amazon River: boats, routes, costs
Fast boats (lanchas rapidas) to Puerto Narino leave from the Leticia port at 8 AM and 2 PM. Cost is $25 one way, 2 hours. Slow cargo boats are $10 but take 4 hours and have no roof shade.
To reach jungle lodges, the hotel arranges boat transfers (usually included in the rate). Heliconia sends a 45-minute motorized canoe. Waira Selva is a 90-minute ride with a wildlife stop at Isla de los Micos.
For Iquitos, Peru, fast boats depart from Santa Rosa at 5 AM. The trip takes 10 to 12 hours and costs $60 to $80 including border stops. Bring food, water, and sunscreen. There is no shade on the top deck.
Budget Amazon trip: Leticia on $50 a day
Stay at Hotel Anaconda or Residencias del Amazonas ($45 to $55/night). Eat at the market near the port where fish plates cost $4 and juice is $1. Walk to Tabatinga for even cheaper meals at Brazilian buffet restaurants ($5/kg).
Skip the $80 organized tours. Walk to the Mundo Amazonico botanical garden (3 km from town, $8 entry) for a self-guided nature experience. Take the $2 boat to Santa Rosa and back for the border crossing experience.
For wildlife, join a shared tour by asking at guesthouses on Calle 8. Groups of 4 to 6 people split costs, bringing an Isla de los Micos day trip down to $30 per person. Night caiman tours split to $20/person in a group of 4.
Ticuna and indigenous community visits
The Ticuna are the largest indigenous group in the Colombian Amazon. Several communities along the river welcome visitors. Comunidad Macedonia (1 hour by boat) offers homestays and craft workshops.
These are not theme parks. You are visiting real villages. Bring school supplies or basic medical supplies as gifts, not candy. Ask permission before photographing people. Most visits include a traditional meal and a walk through medicinal plant gardens.
Arrange community visits through the Leticia tourism office on Calle 8 or your jungle lodge. Independent visits are possible but guides who speak Ticuna make the experience 10 times richer. Expect to pay $40 to $60 per person for a half-day visit.

River levels drop, exposing sandy beaches along the Amazon. Walking trails in the forest are accessible. Pink dolphins concentrate in Lago Tarapoto, making June to September the prime wildlife window. Humidity is slightly lower. This is the best overall time to visit.
Rising Water (Oct-Dec)
Rain increases and the river starts rising. Forest trails begin to flood in November. Fewer tourists mean lower prices and quieter lodges. October still has good wildlife spotting before water levels get too high. The Amazon turns increasingly green.
High Water (Jan-May)
The Amazon floods surrounding forest for miles. Canoe through the treetops in what locals call igapo. March has the highest water, up to 15 meters above low season. Pink dolphins swim through the flooded forest. Unique experience but trails are underwater. February and March draw the most visitors.
Falling Water (May-Jun)
Water recedes, the forest floor reappears, and aquatic life concentrates in shrinking pools. Great for fishing. Tourist numbers are lowest, prices are at their floor. May can still have high water depending on the year. A good compromise between flooded forest and dry trails.

Fly from Bogota, do not take the river
There are no roads to Leticia. The only options are flying (2 hours, $80 to $150 on LATAM or Avianca) or a multi-day boat from Iquitos, Peru. Unless the river journey is your goal, fly. Book 3 to 4 weeks ahead for the best fares. Tuesday and Wednesday flights tend to be cheapest.
