Stay within two blocks of Plaza Mayor for the best experience
Villa de Leyva is a small town and walkability from the plaza makes all the difference. Hotel Duruelo on Carrera 3 and Mesón de los Virreyes on Calle 13 both put you 1-2 minutes from the main square. Casa Quintero and La Perla are within 5 minutes walk.
Properties on the road to Arcabuco or out toward Rio Sachica are quieter and have more space, but add a taxi trip to every evening out. Only choose them if you have a car or are specifically looking for rural peace.
Visit El Fosil and Pozos Azules in the same half-day
El Fosil (7 km north, 5,000 COP entry) and Pozos Azules (5 km west, 5,000 COP entry) are both close enough to combine in a 3-4 hour morning trip. Hire a taxi driver from Plaza Mayor who knows both sites for 40,000-60,000 COP for the combined round trip.
Both sites are outdoor and are better visited in clear weather in the morning before afternoon clouds arrive. El Fosil has the Kronosaurus skeleton, one of the best fossils on public display anywhere in Colombia.
The Sunday market is genuinely worth attending
The Sunday market starts early and winds down by noon. Go between 8am and 10am for the best atmosphere. Local farmers from Arcabuco, Gachantiva, and Raquira bring produce and cheeses that are 30-50% cheaper than in Bogota.
Boyaca cheese, arequipe (caramel spread), ruana blankets, and local pottery are the best purchases. The plaza transforms completely on Sunday mornings and it is the most authentic market experience within easy reach of Bogota.
Book holiday weekends 4-6 weeks ahead or avoid them entirely
Long weekends around Semana Santa, June Sagrado Corazon holidays, Batalla de Boyaca on August 7, and December are when Villa de Leyva fills to capacity. Prices at all hotels double or more and the atmospheric whitewashed streets lose their calm.
Weekday visits, especially Tuesday through Thursday, are dramatically different. You will have the Plaza Mayor nearly to yourself in the morning, restaurants without queues, and hotel rates 30-50% lower.
Combine Villa de Leyva with Ráquira for the best pottery shopping in Colombia
Raquira, 25 kilometers southwest of Villa de Leyva, is Colombia's pottery capital. The main street is lined with workshops selling handmade ceramics directly from the artisans. A taxi from the plaza costs about 30,000-40,000 COP one way.
Prices for quality hand-thrown pottery start at 8,000-15,000 COP for small pieces. Larger decorative pieces run 30,000-80,000 COP. The village church is also worth seeing. Allow 2 hours in Raquira before returning or continuing south toward Bogota.
The colonial hotels are worth paying more for in Villa de Leyva
Budget accommodation in Villa de Leyva is often basic rooms in unconverted old buildings with uncomfortable beds and cold showers. The difference between a $60 room and a $140 room here is significant in terms of comfort and authenticity.
Hotels like Mesón de los Virreyes and Hospedería Casa Quintero are colonial buildings done properly with good linens and functioning bathrooms. The atmosphere is the main attraction in Villa de Leyva and the better hotels genuinely enhance it.
