Amuri vs Ootu: which side of the lagoon wins?
Amuri Beach on the northwest shore gives you the lagoon at its most photogenic. The water is shallow, incredibly clear, and both Etu Moana and Tamanu Beach Club sit directly on it. If your main reason for coming to Aitutaki is that famous turquoise water, start here.
Ootu Beach on the east side is longer, slightly less crowded, and Pacific Resort Aitutaki owns a beautiful stretch of it. The tradeoff: Ootu is about 15 minutes from Arutanga Wharf, so your lagoon cruise pickups require an early transfer. Pick Amuri for convenience, Ootu for space.
Getting around Aitutaki without a car
Aitutaki's main sealed road loops the island and takes about 45 minutes to walk a quarter of. Renting a scooter from one of the shops near Arutanga Wharf costs $25-35/day. That's the real transport answer here. Bicycles are cheaper at $10-15/day but the hills on the southern end near Tautu will test you.
Most hotels offer airport transfers. confirm this before you land. The only 'taxi service' is informal, usually a local with a truck who knows the guesthouse owners. Your hotel can arrange it for around $10-15 per trip within the island. Don't assume you can hail anything from the roadside.
The honest guide to Aitutaki's budget accommodation
Aitutaki Lagoon Backpackers in Arutanga Village is genuinely the cheapest option at $45-75/night, and it does what it says: bunks, shared bathrooms, a social vibe. It's 10 minutes walk to the main Arutanga shops and about 20 minutes scooter ride to Amuri Beach. Fine for solo travellers who'd rather spend on lagoon tours than sheets.
Gina's Garden Lodges in Nikaupara is the step up that makes sense. Private bungalows, gardens, actual peace and quiet. At $75-99/night it's not 'luxury' by any stretch, but it's clean, well-run, and the hosts know everything about getting the most out of the island. If you're travelling as a couple on a tighter budget, Gina's is our pick.
Should you splurge on Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort?
At $650-950/night, Akitua Island Resort is expensive. Full stop. But it's also one of the few places in the Pacific where the price genuinely matches the experience. You're on a private motu with 15 villas, no road noise, no day-trippers, and the lagoon literally surrounding you. We've seen this kind of price point feel hollow at dozens of 'exclusive' resorts. This one earns it.
The 10-minute boat transfer from Arutanga Wharf is included. Meals and some activities are bundled into the rate, which softens the per-day cost if you add it up. Book directly through the resort for the best villa selection. Don't book the cheapest room type and then regret it when your neighbour's balcony has a better view.
Aitutaki for honeymooners: where to actually stay
Paradise Cove Boutique Hotel in Ureia gets our Romantic Stay badge for good reason. It's intimate, beautifully maintained, and the lagoon frontage at Ureia is less trafficked than Amuri. At $145-195/night, it's the most affordable of the genuinely romantic options. Etu Moana on Amuri Beach steps it up with overwater bungalows at $175-230/night.
Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort on Akitua is the obvious top pick if budget isn't the issue. Pacific Resort Aitutaki on Ootu Beach is another strong runner at $450-750/night. Both are proper honeymoon-tier. Book 3-4 months ahead for April-June arrivals. those weeks fill up fast with couples who know the rainy season has just ended.
What nobody tells you before visiting Aitutaki
The island has one main supermarket near Arutanga and a handful of small shops. If you're self-catering at Gina's Garden or Maina Sunset Villas in Vaipae, stock up in Arutanga the day you arrive. Fresh produce arrives on the inter-island flight from Rarotonga a few times a week, not daily. Run out of something on a Sunday and you're eating crackers.
Sunday is quiet. Genuinely quiet. Most local businesses close, and even some hotel restaurants run reduced service. Plan your lagoon cruises and One Foot Island trips for Tuesday through Saturday when the operators are reliably running. And sunscreen: buy it before you arrive, because Aitutaki's small shops charge near-double what you'd pay in Rarotonga.

Amuri sits on Aitutaki's northwestern shore and it's where the lagoon looks exactly like the photos you've been saving. The water is shallow and absurdly clear, with sandbars you can wade out to at low tide. This is the first region we recommend to anyone asking where to base themselves.
Etu Moana and Tamanu Beach Club are both here, with Etu Moana's overwater units sitting literally above the lagoon. Tamanu is slightly more affordable at $110-160/night and still has excellent beach positioning on Amuri Beach itself. You're about 10 minutes by scooter from Arutanga Wharf for your lagoon cruise pickups.
There's no loud nightlife in Amuri, which is a feature, not a bug. A small beach bar near Tamanu opens evenings and does decent cocktails. The nearest shops are back toward Arutanga, so stock basics before you settle in for the evening.
