Punda vs. Otrobanda: which side to base yourself
Punda is the tourist side: UNESCO buildings, Floating Market, jewelry shops, and restaurants. Hotel Posada Larimar ($55-85) and Avila Beach Hotel ($150-220) are both in or near Punda. More expensive, safer at night, easier for first-timers.
Otrobanda is grittier, more local, and 10-15% cheaper. Hotel Otrobanda ($120-175) sits right on the harbor with excellent views of Punda's painted facades from across the water. Worth it if you want a more authentic urban experience. Cross Queen Emma Bridge on foot to Punda in 5 minutes.
Diving in Curaçao: what beginners and experts need to know
The island's northwest shore has 65+ dive sites accessible from shore or by boat. The Superior Producer wreck ($50 guided dive) is the most spectacular. Scuba Lodge and Suites has its own PADI dive centre. Coral Divers at Mambo Beach is another reliable operator.
Snorkelers don't need to dive. The reef at Tugboat Beach (near Jan Thiel) starts 10 meters from shore and is one of the Caribbean's best snorkel experiences: underwater tugboat wreck at 5 meters depth, visible without diving. Free access to the beach, just rent fins and mask ($10-15).
Getting around the island without a rental car
Willemstad's historic center is walkable within 20 minutes. Taxis are the main transport option for beach access: fixed-rate $8-12 to Mambo Beach. Taxi stands are at the Punda waterfront and outside major hotels.
Car rental ($35-60/day) is worthwhile for 3+ day stays and opens up the northwest coast beaches like Cas Abou, Playa Lagun, and Westpunt. The east coast is mostly industrial and less interesting for travelers.
Eating well in Willemstad for ANG 15-30 per meal
The Gouverneur de Rouville restaurant on the Otrobanda waterfront serves proper Antillean food (keshi yena, stoba) with harbor views for ANG 25-40 per person. Worth it for the setting as much as the food.
For the real local experience, the snèks (local fast food shops) near the Waaigat inlet serve fresh fish sandwiches and keshi yena for ANG 10-15. No atmosphere, maximum flavor.
The Pietermaai district: Willemstad's best-kept secret
Pietermaai is a former residential neighborhood between Punda and Mambo Beach. The last decade has seen it transform into the island's best dining and nightlife strip, with former colonial mansions converted into boutique restaurants and bars.
Wander Pietermaaiweg after 7pm for cocktails at The Pietermaai District (a collective of bars in a heritage building) and dinner at restaurants like Bario Urban Street Food. Far more interesting than the tourist restaurants on Handelskade waterfront.
How to do the Klein Curaçao day trip properly
Book through Mermaid Boat Trips (mermaidboattrips.com) or Atlantis Adventures directly, not through your hotel desk (30% markup for identical service). Departs 7:30am Tuesday-Saturday, returns 5pm. Cost: $75-90 includes snorkeling gear, lunch, and drinks.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen only (required by law). The west beach has the best snorkeling. The east lighthouse and beach are quieter but the currents are stronger. Take motion sickness tablets if you're susceptible: the open-water crossing can be choppy.

The northwest coast beaches (Cas Abou, Playa Lagun, Westpunt) are worth the $35-60/day car rental. Cas Abou ($3 entry) is a 45-minute drive and has the island's clearest water. The Pietermaai district is better than Handelskade for dinner

The Floating Market runs daily from 7am
