The Old City inside the Venetian Walls is where the character is. Ledra Street, Onasagorou, and the Laiki Geitonia quarter are all walkable, and you're never more than 15 minutes from something worth seeing. Hotels here range from $55 at Centrum to $150 at Royiatiko, and that spread covers most traveler types.
The New City neighborhoods like Acropolis, Engomi, and Strovolos offer better facilities and quieter streets, but you're trading walkability for comfort. If you have a car or don't mind a €8-10 taxi into the center, that trade-off makes sense. For first-timers, stay inside the walls.
Getting around Nicosia without a car
Most of the Old City is pedestrianized, so your feet are your main transport. From Eleftheria Square to Famagusta Gate is about 15 minutes on foot, and the whole walled city is roughly a 25-minute walk across. OSEL buses cover the wider city well, with the main terminal at Solomos Square serving routes to Strovolos, Engomi, and the suburbs.
Taxis are metered and honest here, unlike in some tourist cities. Expect €6-8 for a short cross-city trip and €10-15 to get to the Hilton or Parklane from the Old City. Bolt and InDriver both work in Nicosia and usually undercut street taxis by 20-30%.

Old City hotels are positioned perfectly for this. Royiatiko is 5 minutes from the crossing point, Centrum Hotel about 8. Don't let the politics put you off. crossing is routine for locals and visitors alike, and the northern side gives you a completely different visual and culinary experience for a few hours.

Onasagorou Street in the Old City is the main artery for evening eating and drinking. It's lined with meze restaurants, wine bars, and coffee shops that stay open late. Summer in Nicosia is brutally hot. Inland Cyprus has no sea breeze to save you, and July-August routinely hits 38-42°C. If you must come in summer, book a hotel with a proper pool.
