Horní náměstí: stay here first
Horní náměstí is the beating heart of Olomouc. The UNESCO Holy Trinity Column sits right in the middle of the square, baroque fountains line the edges, and the city's best restaurants are on side streets like Ostružnická and Riegrova within 3 minutes walk. This is where you want to be.
Hotels here range from $48/night at Pension Na Hradě to $245/night at Hotel Národní Dům. same square, very different experiences. One insider move: rooms facing away from the square on upper floors are quieter and often $20-30/night cheaper than the front-facing ones. Ask specifically when booking.
What to skip: areas that aren't worth it
Avoid booking anything on or near Jeremenkova without reading this first. The street runs along the train station approach and it's functional at best. You're paying old-town prices for a neighbourhood that's a 15-minute walk from anything interesting. The Hotel Clarion earns its place on our list because it has specific business-travel reasons to be there. most other options near the station don't.
The Nové Sady area southeast of the old town looks close on a map. It isn't, really. you're looking at 20-25 minutes on foot to Horní náměstí. Save yourself the walk and book central. The price difference rarely justifies it.
Getting around Olomouc without a car
The tram system is excellent. Lines 1, 2, 4, and 6 cover the main routes, and a single ticket costs 14 CZK (under $1). From Olomouc hlavní nádraží to the old town centre is 3 stops on tram line 2 or 4. Bikes are also a serious option. the city has dedicated lanes along the Morava river path and into Bezručovy sady park.
Taxis from the train station to Horní náměstí should cost 120-150 CZK ($5-7). If a driver quotes more than 200 CZK for that route, get out. Bolt and Uber both operate here and are usually 20-30% cheaper than street taxis.
Olomouc by season: when prices move
Summer (June-August) is busy, warm at 22-28°C, and hotel prices at Horní náměstí hotels are at their peak: $130-245/night for mid-to-upper options. The Flora Olomouc flower show in late April draws serious crowds and fills hotels in that week faster than anything else in the year.
The Christmas market on Horní náměstí in late November and December is genuinely one of the best in the Czech Republic. Book 6 weeks out minimum for that period. January and February are quiet, cold (around -2 to 4°C), and you'll find rates 30-40% lower. Olomouc's best-kept secret for city-break value.
Where to eat within walking distance of your hotel
If you're staying near Horní náměstí, Moravská restaurace on Horní náměstí itself is the obvious option. solid Moravian food, reasonable prices. But walk 5 minutes to Café Caesar on Horní náměstí for a faster lunch, or down Riegrova street to find lower prices and less tourist traffic. Olomouc's food scene punches above its size.
Olomoucké tvarůžky (the pungent local cheese) is polarising but worth trying once. You'll find it on almost every menu in the old town. Don't eat it in your hotel room. Trust us on this. even a well-ventilated room will remember it.
Picking the right hotel for your trip type
Romantic weekend? Hotel Trinity on Horní náměstí at $145-200/night is the obvious answer. the location and atmosphere are hard to beat. Business trip? Hotel Clarion Congress on Jeremenkova at $160-220/night has the conference facilities and the parking that the old-town boutiques don't. Culture trip on a tighter budget? Hostel Poet on Dolní náměstí at $55-85/night is central, well-rated, and leaves money for the Archdiocesan Museum and a decent dinner.
Luxury travellers should look hard at Residence Galerie on Denisova ulice. At $260-360/night and a 9.2 rating, it's the best-rated option on our list by some margin. It's 7 minutes walk from Horní náměstí. far enough to feel calm, close enough that the square is still your backyard.

This is the obvious choice and it's obvious for good reason. You're sleeping inside one of the best-preserved baroque city centres in Central Europe. The Holy Trinity Column, the Astronomical Clock on the town hall, the caesar fountain. all within a 3-minute walk of any hotel here.
Prices reflect the location. Budget starts at $48/night at Pension Na Hradě and tops out at $245/night at Hotel Národní Dům. both on the same square. The range is real and so is the quality difference. What doesn't change is the location advantage: you never need a tram.
Night noise is the one genuine trade-off. Horní náměstí hosts events, markets, and the occasional outdoor concert. Request a rear-facing room if you're a light sleeper. most hotels here will oblige if you ask directly at booking.

Dolní náměstí (Lower Square) is connected to Horní náměstí by a short pedestrian street. They're 3 minutes apart on foot, but Dolní feels calmer. fewer tour groups, better coffee shops, and slightly lower hotel prices.
