Egeskov Castle in Kværndrup is 25 km south of Odense and one of Europe's best-preserved Renaissance moated castles. You need a car or the 920 bus from Odense Bus Terminal, and you'll want at least 3 hours. Entry is around 225 DKK for adults.
Svendborg is 45 minutes by train from Odense Station and worth a half-day for the harbor area and islands ferry. If you're doing this trip, consider booking a night at Clarion Collection Hotel Christiansminde on the Svendborg waterfront ($120-175/night) instead of rushing back.

Cabinn Odense in the City Center is the cheapest vetted option at $55-85/night. Rooms are small. genuinely small. but the location on Øster Stationsvej puts you 10 minutes walk from Flakhaven and the cathedral. Don't expect luxury. Do expect clean, functional, and well-located.
Danhostel Odense City steps it up slightly at $68-95/night with an 8.1 rating that's hard to argue with at that price. It's in the City Center, which is rare for a hostel-style property. Book the private rooms if you're traveling as a couple. they're worth the small premium over dormitories.
Funen beyond Odense: hotels worth leaving the city for
Most visitors sleep in Odense and treat the rest of Funen as day trips. That's a mistake if you have the time. Falsled Kro on the South Funen Coast near Millinge is one of the finest small inns in Denmark, with a restaurant that's been pulling serious food travelers for decades. Rates start at $320/night, but you're not just buying a room.
Hotel Storebælt in Nyborg sits directly on the water with views of the Great Belt Bridge, one of the longest bridges in Europe at 6,611 meters. It's 25 minutes from Odense by train and rates run $260-350/night. For the view and the calm, it's worth every dollar.
Getting around Odense: what actually works
Odense is a bike city. Full stop. The municipal bike-share program CityBike Odense has stations throughout the center and a day pass runs around 70 DKK. From Comwell H.C. Andersen on Hans Mules Gade, you can cycle to Odense Zoo in about 12 minutes on the dedicated path along Sdr. Boulevard.
Fynbus city buses cover the wider area reliably. The 41 and 42 lines connect the train station to Fruens Bøge, where Scandic Odense sits. A single trip is 24 DKK. Taxis from the station to City Center hotels cost around 80-100 DKK, which is only worth it late at night with luggage.
When to book and when to skip Odense
June through August is the peak season and the Odense International Film Festival in August makes it the busiest single week of the year. City Center hotels sell out fast and prices jump 30-40%. Book at least 6 weeks ahead for anything decent. The H.C. Andersen Festival in late July has a similar effect.
September is genuinely the sweet spot. Crowds drop, temperatures stay at 13-16°C, and hotel rates come back down to normal. You'll get Comwell H.C. Andersen for under $160/night instead of the summer peak. October-November works too if you're happy with cooler weather and shorter days.

One thing to know: Vesterbro, just west of the main pedestrian zone, gets noisy on Friday and Saturday nights. Ask for a room facing the courtyard if you're a light sleeper at any hotel within two blocks of Brandts Passage.

Trains to Svendborg and the rest of Funen leave from here too. If you're using Odense as a base for wider island exploration, this is your neighborhood.
Hotel Ansgar is the anchor here and it earns its 8.3 rating with consistently solid rooms and a location that's 12 minutes walk to the H.C. Andersen Museum. Rates run $105-150/night, which is honest mid-range pricing. It's the most popular hotel in our vetted list for a reason.
Skip the cluster of budget guesthouses on Nørregade east of the station. We've seen the reviews and they're not good. Stick to Ansgar or head to the City Center.

Fruens Bøge is the forest-park neighborhood on the south side of Odense, bordered by the Odense River and the beech woodland it's named after. It's a different city here: quieter, greener, and genuinely residential. The Odense Zoo on Sdr. Boulevard is the main draw and it's one of the best in Scandinavia.
Scandic Odense sits in this neighborhood and earns its Family Friendly badge honestly. You're 5 minutes walk to the zoo entrance and the cycle path into the City Center takes about 15 minutes. Rates run $145-210/night, which is reasonable given the setting and facilities.
The trade-off is nightlife and restaurants. You're not in walking distance of anything interesting after 8pm. Book here if you have kids or if you specifically want calm. Otherwise, the City Center is a better base.

Nyborg and Svendborg work better as overnight stops
A lot of visitors do Hotel Storebælt in Nyborg or Clarion Christiansminde in Svendborg as a one-night side trip and then return to Odense. That's fine, but both hotels are better with two nights. You need one evening to actually settle in and appreciate the waterfront, especially in Svendborg where the best harbor atmosphere is after 6pm.
City Center parking is not your problem
If you're driving into Odense, park at the Filosoffen parking garage on Filosoffen street near the Brandts Quarter. It costs around 15 DKK/hour and is within 8 minutes walk of every City Center hotel on our list. Don't try to park closer. the pedestrian zone restrictions will catch you and fines run 510 DKK.
