Centro vs. the hillside: which location is right for you?
Centro is Baños at street level. taffy being pulled in shop windows on Calle Ambato, the thermal pools at Complejo Las Piscinas five minutes away on foot, the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Agua Santa two blocks from Parque Central. It's loud, it's lively, and it puts everything within walking distance. Budget and mid-range hotels dominate here.
The Runtun hillside is a completely different Baños. You trade walkability for elevation, quiet, and a volcano view that changes every hour of the day. Luna Runtun and Luna Volcan are both up here, and neither feels like the town below. Expect to pay $5-8 per taxi ride down to Centro. but honestly, once you're settled up there, you won't want to leave.
The waterfall district hotels. worth it or overrated?
The stretch east of Centro toward Pailón del Diablo in Río Verde has a handful of spa-style resorts that market themselves heavily on Instagram. Some deliver. Hotel Samari Spa Resort in the waterfall district is the real deal. proper thermal pools, grounds that back onto the river, and enough distance from Centro's noise to actually relax. Others in this stretch are a let-down in person.
The practical reality: you're 15-25 minutes from Centro by taxi from most waterfall-district hotels, which costs $6-10 each way. If you plan to be in town most days, factor that in. But if a spa retreat is the actual goal, this corridor between Baños and Río Verde is where you want to be.
How to pick the right budget hotel in Centro
There's a big difference between budget hotels near Parque Central and the ones clustered around the bus terminal on Calle Reyes. Stay near the park. You're paying the same $40-75/night but getting far less street noise, better security, and a 5-minute walk to the thermal baths instead of 12.
Hostal Plantas y Blanco on Calle Martínez is the one we'd send a friend to. It's not flashy, but it's honest. clean rooms, a decent breakfast, and a rooftop that actually has a volcano view. Skip the places with laminated 5-star signs near the terminal. We've seen that trick too many times.
Luxury in Baños: what you actually get for $300+/night
Casa del Árbol Lodge on the upper slopes and Luna Volcan Luxury Lodge on the Runtun hillside are the top two. Both sit above 2,000 metres. At that price point you're getting private terraces with Tungurahua views, serious food, and a level of quiet that Centro can't offer at any price. The swing at Casa del Árbol. the one famous on social media. is literally on the property.
Are they worth it? If you're splitting it between two people, $155-210 per person per night for that setting is genuinely competitive with comparable properties in the Andes. Don't apologize for the price. Book it, go slow, and stay at least 2 nights. the views shift dramatically from morning to dusk.
Getting around Baños: what nobody tells you before you arrive
Centro is very walkable. Calle Ambato to the thermal baths is under 10 minutes on foot, and most points of interest in town are within a 15-minute walk of Parque Central. Taxis within Centro cost $1.50-2.50. Renting a bicycle for the Ruta de las Cascadas runs $5-8/day from shops on Calle Maldonado.
The Runtun hillside is a different story. There's no reliable bus up there. you're depending on taxis, which run $5-8 per trip. Hotels like Luna Runtun will arrange transfers, but confirm this in advance. For the waterfall district and Río Verde, local buses run along the main highway roughly every 30 minutes for $0.50-1 per ride.
What to know about Baños's thermal baths before you book
The thermal baths are a big reason people come here, and they're genuinely good. fed by volcanic springs, sitting right below the Basílica on Calle Thomas Halflants. Entry runs $3-5. They get packed on weekends, especially Saturday mornings when Ecuadorians from Ambato and Riobamba arrive in numbers. Go weekday evenings if you're staying in Centro.
Hotels on the Runtun hillside and the waterfall district often have their own private thermal or heated pools. Hotel Samari Spa Resort and Luna Runtun both do. If soaking is a priority, factor that into your hotel choice. a private pool at $120-180/night can beat paying $5 and sharing a crowded public pool with 200 strangers.

Centro is where most visitors land, and for good reason. Parque Central is the anchor. the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Agua Santa faces it on one side, and Calle Ambato runs along it packed with taffy shops, restaurants, and tour operators. The thermal baths on Calle Thomas Halflants are under 10 minutes on foot from any Centro hotel.
Hotel Sangay is the best mid-range anchor here, consistently delivering clean rooms, a pool, and a location that's calm despite being two blocks from the park. Posada del Arte is the one for travelers who want personality. original artwork throughout, a courtyard garden, and a team that actually knows the area. Hotel Isluga rounds things out at the higher end of Centro pricing with a polished finish.
Avoid the strip near the bus terminal on Calle Reyes. Noise, safety, and quality all drop sharply within a block of there. Pay the same rate closer to Parque Central or Calle Martínez and you'll wonder why anyone stays near the terminal at all.

The Runtun hillside rises sharply east of Centro, and the hotels up here exist in a completely different register. You're 200-400 metres above town, looking directly at Tungurahua on clear mornings. Luna Runtun Adventure Spa sits at around 2,000 metres and has been the benchmark property in Baños for years. the spa, the views, and the food are all serious.
Luna Volcan Luxury Lodge takes things further. At $280-380/night it's the most expensive on our list aside from Casa del Árbol, and it earns it. Private terraces, a pool that seems to hang over the valley, and a kitchen that would embarrass most city restaurants. Sunrise here on a clear June morning is genuinely hard to describe.
Getting down to Centro takes 10-15 minutes by taxi and costs $5-8. Both hotels arrange transfers. If you're planning to be in town all day every day, the hillside might feel inconvenient. But most guests up here stop wanting to go down after the first morning.
