Charles Darwin Avenue is the main artery. your hotel, your tour operator, and your water taxi to Punta Estrada are all within a few blocks of each other. Every inter-island ferry and most day-trip boats leave from the dock here. Getting this right saves you an hour of logistics every single morning.
Casa de Judy sits right on Charles Darwin Avenue and is genuinely one of the best-positioned budget-to-mid options on the island. We've seen too many first-timers book something 'close' to Puerto Ayora and end up in a taxi at 6am every day. Stay central your first time. explore further once you know the rhythm.
The highlands are a different Galápagos.
Most visitors treat the Santa Cruz highlands as a half-day trip from Puerto Ayora, which means they leave by 3pm and miss the evening light on the tortoises at El Chato. Staying up here at Galapagos Safari Camp or Pikaia Lodge means you're there when the crowds aren't. and the temperature drops to 16-18°C at night, which feels wild after the coast.
Pikaia Lodge in El Chato is 45 minutes by taxi from Puerto Ayora but includes guided excursions in the rate. Royal Palm Galapagos near Media Luna is a bit more accessible at $180-290/night, with a hotel shuttle running to town. Both are worth it if you've already done the coast.
Isabela is the sleeper island.
Puerto Villamil gets maybe 15% of Galápagos visitors but has Los Túneles, the flamingo lagoon on Calle Las Fragatas, and Sierra Negra volcano. all within striking distance. The beachfront strip is quiet enough that you'll have company from sea lions, not selfie sticks.
Scalesia Lodge and Isabela Island Hotel both sit on the main beachfront within 5 minutes walk of the pier. The ferry from Puerto Ayora runs once daily and takes 2.5 hours. Book a 2-night minimum here. a day trip won't cut it.
What actually matters when choosing a hotel here.
In the Galápagos, location beats everything else. A 'nice' hotel that's 20 minutes from the dock means you're paying taxi fares every time you go anywhere, and boats don't wait. Proximity to the Puerto Ayora waterfront or Puerto Villamil pier should be your first filter, not room size or pool.
Your second filter is what's included. The better lodges, like Finch Bay Eco Hotel at Punta Estrada, bundle naturalist-guided excursions into the rate. That changes the price comparison entirely. a $220/night room with excursions often beats a $110/night room where you're booking everything separately at tourist prices.
Galápagos seasons: what no one tells you.
The garúa season (June-November) is cooler and mistier on land, but underwater visibility at spots like Gordon Rocks and Kicker Rock can be exceptional. Air temps stay around 20-22°C. Hotel prices actually hold fairly high in July and August because of Northern Hemisphere summer travel. don't assume off-season means cheaper.
December through April is the warm season: air temps hit 27-30°C, the sea is calmer, and hatchling tortoises are active near Cerro Mesa. This is peak pricing, with mid-range Puerto Ayora rooms running $120-200/night. Book the highland lodges by September for a December stay. they go first.
Getting around without wasting half your trip.
Within Puerto Ayora, everything worth doing is walkable from Charles Darwin Avenue. the Charles Darwin Research Station is 15 minutes on foot, Las Grietas is a 10-minute water taxi plus 10-minute walk. Taxis are cheap: $1.50-3 for most in-town trips. Don't hire a private car for anything under 30 minutes.
Inter-island: ferries cost $30-35 one-way and run early (usually 7am departures). The Baltra airport transfer to Puerto Ayora takes 45 minutes by shared bus and ferry, costing about $5. Fly between islands only if time is genuinely short. the ferry is fine and the airport at Baltra has nothing worth your time.

Puerto Ayora is the largest town in the Galápagos and for good reason: everything departs from here. Charles Darwin Avenue runs along the waterfront and is lined with tour operators, restaurants, and the water taxi dock. The Charles Darwin Research Station is at the east end, about 15 minutes walk from the main pier.
Hotels here range from $70/night guesthouses to $380/night eco-resorts. Casa de Judy on Charles Darwin Avenue and Hotel Solymar on the Malecon are both mid-range and well-located. Finch Bay Eco Hotel at Punta Estrada is a 5-minute water taxi ride across the bay and worth every extra dollar if you can stretch the budget.
Avoid anything more than 3 blocks uphill from the waterfront. the prices don't drop much but the convenience does. The streets behind the bus terminal near Calle 12 de Febrero are local residential blocks with nothing tourist-relevant nearby. Stick to the Malecon corridor.
