Don't overplan. Asmara rewards wandering. The side streets off Liberation Avenue towards Tiravolo have better coffee shops and less foot traffic than the main drag. Give yourself at least 3 full days. the architecture alone justifies it.
Budget travel in Asmara: what $45-95/night actually gets you
Crystal Hotel in City Centre is the honest budget pick. Rooms are basic but clean, you're central, and $45-70/night is hard to argue with in a UNESCO-listed capital. Savana Hotel in Tiravolo steps it up slightly at $65-95/night with better finishes and a quieter location about 12 minutes walk from Liberation Avenue.
The budget trap to avoid: guesthouses near Medebar Market that look cheap online but hit you with 'tourist supplements' at check-in. Stick to our list and you won't deal with that.

Albergo Italia on Liberation Avenue is the pick here. It's been operating since the Italian colonial era and the bones of the building are genuinely historic. At $100-145/night it's not cheap, but you're sleeping inside the heritage rather than just looking at it from the street.
Khartoum Hotel near Cinema Roma puts you at one of the city's most photographed intersections. The Art Deco Cinema Roma is literally steps away. If the architecture is your reason for coming, these two hotels are the only ones that really deliver on that promise.
Business travel in Asmara: practical advice
Inter Hotel in City Centre is built for this. It's $130-175/night, reliable Wi-Fi, and close to government offices along Liberation Avenue. Most serious business meetings happen in the City Centre or Forto area, so location works in your favour. Don't book out in Sembel or Godaif if you're here to work.
Asmara Palace Hotel on Airport Road is worth considering if you're taking multiple short trips. You can be at the airport in under 20 minutes without fighting traffic at 5am. At $185-230/night it's not cheap, but the time savings are real.
Couples and romantic stays in Asmara
Royalty Hotel Asmara in Sembel is the top pick for couples at $280-370/night. The area is quieter than City Centre, the hotel itself has the nicest finishes on our list, and it genuinely earns its Romantic Stay badge. Intercontinental Asmara in Forto is more central and almost as good at $260-340/night.
For something with more character and a lower price tag, Albergo Italia's historic setting on Liberation Avenue has a romance to it that modern hotels can't fake. Book a room on the upper floors for the street view.
Things that catch visitors off guard in Asmara
The altitude hits harder than people expect. Asmara sits at 2,325 metres above sea level. The first day you may feel breathless just walking from Liberation Avenue to the Fiat Tagliero Building on Gheza Banda Street. It passes, but take it easy on day one.
Photography restrictions are real. Don't photograph government buildings, the airport, or military infrastructure. The rules aren't always clearly posted, and the consequences for ignoring them aren't worth testing. Ask your hotel before pointing a camera at anything official-looking.

Crystal Hotel and Inter Hotel both sit in City Centre, giving you a solid budget option at $45-70/night and a proper business hotel at $130-175/night. Albergo Italia on Liberation Avenue itself is the most atmospheric address in the city, full stop.
The trade-off is noise. Liberation Avenue stays active until late, and market streets nearby wake up early. If you're a light sleeper, request a room facing away from the main street.
