This is the only decision that really matters in Harar. Harar Jugol is the UNESCO-listed walled city, a 48-hectare maze of 362 alleys where the streets smell like frankincense and fresh injera. New Town is the modern expansion outside the walls, practical but characterless.
Staying inside Jugol puts you 5 minutes from Gidir Magala market and the Arthur Rimbaud House. New Town saves you $20-40/night but costs you that in daily tuk-tuk fares. Our honest take: pay a bit more and sleep inside the walls. You'll thank yourself.
The hyena feeding: how to make it work from your hotel
The nightly hyena feeding near Erer Gate is the one experience in Harar with zero parallels anywhere on earth. Wild spotted hyenas are called by name, hand-fed meat on a stick, and they've been doing this for over 500 years. It starts around 7-8pm and lasts 20-30 minutes.
Hotels inside Harar Jugol like Walled City Boutique Hotel and Jugol Hotel are 5-8 minutes on foot from Erer Gate. From New Town, you're looking at a 15-minute bajaj ride in the dark on unpaved road. Eat dinner early, tip the feeder 100-200 ETB, and skip the overpriced 'tour packages' that add nothing but a middleman.
Getting around Harar without losing your mind
Inside Harar Jugol, you walk. Full stop. The alleys are too narrow for any vehicle and that's the whole point. The walled city is small enough that Shoa Gate to Erer Gate takes about 15 minutes at a casual pace. Wear shoes you don't mind scuffing on cobblestones.
Between the walled city and New Town, bajajs (three-wheeled auto-rickshaws) are everywhere and cost 30-80 ETB per trip. Taxis from the main stand near Harar Gate Hotel run 150-300 ETB for longer distances. Don't bother renting a car inside the city. There's nowhere to park and the alleys will wreck your nerves.
What to eat and where near your hotel
Harar's food scene is genuinely underrated. Foul (spiced fava beans) and muufo (harari flatbread) are breakfast staples sold from stalls near the Gidir Magala market from 6am. The market itself is one of the oldest in East Africa and worth visiting before 9am before the crowds and heat build.
For dinner, the restaurants inside Harar Jugol near the Arthur Rimbaud House on Makina Girgir Street are your best bet. Harar-style beef tibs and harari biscuits show up on most menus for 150-300 ETB. Skip the overpriced tourist restaurants near Shoa Gate that print 'traditional harari cuisine' in four languages. They've watered everything down.

Eid al-Adha brings the second major spike, with dates shifting yearly.
