The Strip runs along the coastal side of Kololi, anchored by Senegambia Beach Hotel and stretching toward Palma Rima Road. It's the social hub of The Gambia's tourist belt: restaurants, craft markets, beach bars, and a nightclub that doesn't stop until 3am on weekends.
Book a Strip hotel if you want convenience and don't mind noise. If you're here for a quiet beach holiday, book something on Leybato Beach or Kairaba Avenue and take a 15-minute taxi to the Strip when you want the action. that's honestly the smarter move.
Kololi vs. Bijilo vs. Kotu: picking the right base
Kololi proper covers everything from Kololi Village to the Strip. it's central, busy, and has the widest range of hotels from $45 to $175/night. Bijilo, about 3km north along Bertil Harding Highway, is calmer with Bijilo Forest Park on your doorstep and two of the best luxury resorts in the country. Kotu sits south of Kololi and is more residential, with Kotu Beach and the brilliant Kotu Stream Bird Sanctuary nearby.
Families and nature lovers should look hard at Bijilo and Kotu. First-timers wanting to be in the thick of things should base themselves in Kololi, ideally on Kairaba Avenue rather than the Strip itself.
When to book: Kololi's seasons explained
November through February is peak season. Hotels on the Strip and Kairaba Avenue fill fast, and prices jump 20-35% from October rates. Book Senegambia Beach Hotel and Kairaba Beach Hotel at least 6-8 weeks ahead if you're travelling in December or January.
March through May offers a real window: drier weather, thinner crowds, and mid-range hotels dropping to $90-140/night. June to October is the rainy season. cheap, but humidity and afternoon downpours make beach days unpredictable. The jungle gets lush and birdwatching peaks, so it's not all bad.
Getting the most out of Kololi's beach scene
Not every 'beach hotel' is actually on the beach. Leybato Beach Hotel sits directly on Leybato Beach, 2 minutes to the water. Senegambia Beach Hotel has its own access point. Others, like Kairaba Beach Hotel, are 8-12 minutes walk from the shore. still close, but not the same thing.
The beach in front of the Senegambia Strip gets crowded and is heavily worked by beach vendors. Walk 10 minutes north toward Bijilo for noticeably quieter stretches. The beach near Coco Ocean Resort on Bijilo Coast is some of the most pristine on this part of the Atlantic coast.
Budget travel in Kololi: what $45-100/night actually gets you
Kololi Inn in Kololi Village is the only genuinely budget-vetted pick in this guide, starting at $45/night. It's no-frills. a fan or basic AC room, simple breakfast, and a 15-minute walk from Kololi Beach. It's clean and honest, which is more than can be said for some of the cheaper guesthouses on the back streets off Palma Rima Road.
Leybato Beach Hotel at $65-95/night is the next step up and worth every extra dollar: you're actually on a beach for under $100. Skip the roadside guesthouses between Kololi Village and the Strip that advertise $30-40 rooms online. the photos are almost never accurate.
Luxury in Kololi: why the top-end hotels earn their price
Coco Ocean Resort on Bijilo Coast at $310-480/night is the best luxury property in the area, full stop. The design, service, and beach access are in a different league from everything else. Sheraton Gambia at Brufut Heights runs $270-420/night and adds a large spa, multiple pools, and the kind of structured service that genuinely justifies the bill.

This is where most first-timers land and many come back to. The Senegambia Strip runs through the middle of it: restaurants, craft markets, beach bars, and a beach that's busy but accessible. Kairaba Avenue threads south, lined with grocery stores, pharmacies, and local restaurants that aren't aimed at tourists.
Hotels here range from Kololi Inn at $45/night in Kololi Village to Senegambia Beach Hotel at $110-175/night right on the Strip. Palma Rima Hotel on Palma Rima Road is a solid mid-range pick at $120-180/night with a pool and better rooms than the price suggests. Leybato Beach Hotel is the quieter, beach-direct alternative on Leybato Beach. easy to overlook, shouldn't be.
Avoid the back streets between Kololi Village and the Strip for accommodation. The cheapest guesthouses there have chronic noise and safety issues that don't show up in online reviews. The main corridors are fine. it's the unlit side streets you want to skip.

Getting to the Strip from Bijilo takes about 15 minutes by taxi and costs 100-200 GMD. That's a minor inconvenience for the quieter surroundings. Honestly, if budget allows, base yourself here and taxi to the Strip for dinner.

Kotu is the quieter neighbour south of Kololi, built around Kotu Beach and the Kotu Stream Bird Sanctuary. Bakau is a real Gambian town, not a tourist zone. Ngala Lodge on Atlantic Coast Road sits here, tucked among local streets about 8km from the Senegambia Strip. The drive in from the main highway takes you past the Bakau fish market. a genuine, working market that has nothing to do with tourism. That context matters: this is a different experience from the Strip.
Brufut Heights is further south, about 15km from central Kololi, and that's where Sheraton Gambia Hotel Resort and Spa operates.
