Skip the overpriced 'view rooms' in random guesthouses along the highway. Pay the extra $20-30 and go for Rooms Kazbegi Village in Gergeti at $65-95/night instead. You get a real setting, not just a price tag that promises a view.
Is the luxury worth it in Kazbegi?

Getting around Kazbegi without a car
The Gergeti Trinity Church trail is walkable from Gergeti Village, no car needed. It's about 20 minutes from the main square in Stepantsminda to the village on foot. Most of the town center restaurants, guesthouses, and the small local market are also walkable.
For anything beyond the immediate area, you'll need wheels. Local 4x4 drivers at the central square charge $40-60 per day for Truso Valley or Juta trips. Always agree the price before you get in. most drivers speak basic English and prices are fairly fixed in high season.
What people get wrong about Kazbegi hotels
We've seen this mistake hundreds of times: booking based on a photo of Gergeti Trinity Church from the hotel's Instagram, only to arrive and find the actual room faces the parking lot. Ask specifically which rooms have the Kazbek-facing view and whether it's blocked by the new construction on the upper road.
