Choosing Between Stadtmitte and Outer Neighborhoods
Stadtmitte hotels around the Hauptbahnhof (central station) are the most convenient base. S-Bahn, U-Bahn, and buses all connect from here. Koenigstrasse shopping, the Marktplatz, and the Schlossplatz are all walkable. The downside is street noise on lower floors from the station exits.
Degerloch (relexa hotel) and Schlossgarten (Hotel am Schlossgarten, Althoff) offer quieter stays with parks nearby. Both require a short tram or taxi ride to the center. Degerloch sits 200 meters above sea level and temperatures are 2-3 degrees cooler in summer. The view over the Stuttgart basin is good from higher floors.
Stuttgart's Wine Culture and Where to Drink It
Stuttgart produces Trollinger and Lemberger red wines from vineyards literally inside the city limits. The Stuttgarter Weinwanderweg wine trail starts in Uhlbach and loops through 7km of working vineyards. You can walk from the Cannstatter Wasen U-Bahn stop. Besen (seasonal wine taverns) open when the white tablecloth is hung outside the farmhouse. No reservations, no pretense, good wine.
The Vinothek Stuttgart near the Schillerplatz lets you taste 500 Wuerttemberg wines without committing to a bottle. A glass runs $5-12. It's more useful than any wine tour. The Markthalle wine section stocks regional producers at retail prices.
Car Museums: Mercedes-Benz and Porsche Back to Back
The Mercedes-Benz Museum in Bad Cannstatt costs $14 (students $7) and takes 2-3 hours. It traces 140 years of automotive history from Benz's first car to modern F1 machines. Arrive at opening (9am) on weekends to avoid tour groups. The archive library on the ground floor is free to enter.
Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen costs $10 and is 45 minutes from Mercedes-Benz by S-Bahn (go via Stadtmitte). Both on the same day is ambitious but doable. Start with Porsche (opens at 9am weekdays, 10am weekends) and finish at Mercedes before 5pm closing. Combined admission is $22, both tours run about 5 hours total.
What to Eat in Stuttgart (Beyond Pretzels)
Stuttgart's Markthalle on Dorotheenstrasse is the best food hall in southwest Germany. The Maultaschen stand on the east end sells the genuine article at $8 for a bowl. The cheese section has regional Swabian varieties you won't find in supermarkets. Lunch at the Markthalle is better and cheaper than any nearby restaurant.
Zellerleweg restaurant in Degerloch serves Swabian classics in a building dating to 1890. The Linsen mit Spaetzle (lentils with egg noodles and Saitenwurst sausage) costs $14 and is the dish Stuttgart is known for. Book for weekday lunch. Weekend dinner requires a reservation 2-3 weeks ahead.
Day Trips from Stuttgart
Tubingen is 40 minutes by train (direct from Stuttgart Central, $18 return). The medieval old town with the Stift church, the half-timbered Marktgasse, and the Neckar punting boats are all accessible on foot from the station.
