Tamale as a Base for Mole National Park
Most visitors use Tamale as a one-night stopover before heading to Mole. That's underselling both. Tamale itself has a good traditional market, the nearby Larabanga Mosque (possibly the oldest mosque in Ghana, built in 1421), and access to several traditional Dagomba chiefdom sites. Give it 2 nights.
The road to Mole from Tamale via Fufulso junction and Damongo is mostly tarmacked now. A shared taxi from Tamale Central takes 3 hours. The park entrance fee is $10-15 USD. A guided walk costs another $5-10 and is required. Elephants, antelope, warthogs, and hippos are reliably seen. Lions are present but rarely spotted.
Navigating Tamale's Neighborhoods
Central Tamale holds the main market, the roundabout junction, and most budget guesthouses. The market is busiest Monday and Friday (market days). The town sprawls without clear landmarks. Ask your hotel to sketch the key routes when you arrive.
Lamashegu and Kalpohin in the north have better-quality hotels with easier highway access. Gurugu and Vittin in the east are quieter residential areas with the city's top-end properties. Taxis between any two points in the city cost 5-15 GHS. Confirm the price before getting in.
Tamale Central Market: What to Buy and What to Skip
The Tamale market on Market Road sells everything from smoked bushmeat and shea butter to local fabric (batik and kente). The shea products (soap, butter, oil) from Northern Ghana producers in the market are genuinely good and priced at source. Expect to pay 10-30 GHS for quality shea butter.
Skip the tourist-priced souvenir stalls near the market entrance. Walk deeper in to the fabric section for better kente prices. Haggling is expected on everything except food. Don't photograph market vendors without asking. Most people are friendly if you introduce yourself first.
Larabanga Mosque and the Savannah Mosques Route
Larabanga Mosque, 13km west of Damongo and 2 hours from Tamale by road, is one of the oldest mud-brick mosques in West Africa. Entry is $5 and includes a guided explanation of the Sudano-Sahelian architecture. The adjacent Mysterious Stone is a local legend worth hearing about.
The full savannah mosque circuit includes Nakore and Wa mosques further west. Wa (capital of Upper West Region) is 3 hours from Tamale. The Wale Wale route through Bole connects them. A 2-day road trip covering Tamale-Mole-Larabanga-Wa is a realistic itinerary for adventurous travelers.
When to Visit: Dry Season vs Rain Season
November to February is the golden window. Harmattan winds from the Sahara reduce humidity and keep temperatures manageable at 25-32C. Mole game viewing is at its best as animals cluster around diminishing water sources. Hotel availability is easier and prices stable.
April to May hits 38-40C before the rains break in June. The rainy season (June to October) makes some roads to Mole difficult, particularly in September after sustained rains. The landscape turns green and beautiful in rainy season, but logistics are harder. Local drivers know which tracks are passable.
Day Trips from Tamale
Salaga slave market ruins are 90km east (1.5 hours by car). It's a sobering and important historical site from the trans-Saharan slave trade era. Entry is free and a local guide charges $5-10. Combine with the Kente weaving villages around Bonwire on the way back.
Yendi, 90km northeast, is the seat of the Ya-Na (paramount chief of the Dagomba people) and the location of significant traditional festivals. The Damba festival in October/November is worth planning around. Ask at your Tamale hotel about current access since local politics occasionally affect visitor permissions.

Rooms in the $45-90 range are adequate here. Don't expect luxury finishes. Do expect reliable AC in the better guesthouses and a simple breakfast of tea, eggs, and local bread. Street food from the market is excellent and very cheap.

Better hotels with highway access
These northern districts have newer hotel stock built for business travelers and NGO workers. Gariba Lodge in Lamashegu and Mole Motel Tamale Annex in Kalpohin are both here. Better-maintained rooms, more reliable utilities, and easier access to the Mole highway.
Slightly removed from the central market energy but better for those who want clean, consistent accommodation. Taxi to central Tamale costs 8-12 GHS. Most hotels here have secure parking for those traveling by car.

The Tamale Royal Park Hotel's pool is the city's best. At $290-380/night, it's expensive for Ghana but justified if you're here for a week and need to decompress between field visits or safari days.

Kanvilli Guest House sits in the residential neighborhood of the same name, a quieter area northwest of the center. At $180-230/night it's one of the better mid-range choices. The gardens are maintained and the service is personal.
A 15-minute taxi from the central market. Not ideal for transit travelers who need to catch early vehicles to Mole. But for leisure travelers or those working with local organizations, the calm setting is a genuine plus.

Tamale Central Market on a Friday. The Dagomba traditional drumming that starts around sunset near the main roundabout. The Larabanga Mosque 2 hours west. Northern Ghana has one of West Africa's richest living traditional cultures.
Family
Tamale Royal Park Hotel in Vittin with its pool is the only real family choice. Children under 12 visit Mole for free. Elephant walks at Mole are memorable for kids. Keep children hydrated: 35C heat is serious in the dry season.
Budget
Mariam Hotel at $45-75/night in Central Tamale. TZ and groundnut soup from the market for $2. Shared tro-tro to Mole for $8. Northern Ghana is extremely affordable and the safari experience at Mole is world-class for the price.
Nature
Mole National Park, 3 hours west of Tamale, is Ghana's largest protected area with 93 mammal species. The Mole dam waterhole is visible from the hotel terraces. Elephants arrive daily. This is the wildlife draw that justifies the entire journey north.
Foodie
Gariba Lodge restaurant for the best local menu in a hotel setting. The central market food stalls for the real thing: TZ with groundnut soup, grilled guinea fowl, shito (pepper sauce), and kenkey. Northern Ghanaian food is distinct from coastal cuisine and excellent.

March and April are the hottest months, hitting 38-40C before the rains break. Not ideal for outdoor exploration. Pool access becomes essential. Game viewing at Mole is still good as animals concentrate at the dam.

The rains arrive in June and continue through September. Temperatures drop to comfortable 25-28C levels. Some roads to Mole can be difficult after heavy rains. The landscape turns vividly green. Low hotel rates and almost no other tourists.

October and November see the rains end and roads improve. November is excellent: cooler temperatures, good roads, and animals starting to concentrate around water. The Damba traditional festival in Tamale happens in October or November depending on the Islamic calendar.

December to February is the best time. Dry, clear, 25-30C, and game viewing at Mole is at peak quality. Animals cluster around the dam. Book Mole Motel or any Tamale hotel 4-6 weeks ahead for December-January peak. Christmas week in particular fills up.

Mole Motel (the park's only hotel, on the ridge above the waterhole) has limited rooms and fills on weekends and holidays.
