First time in Milos? Start here
Most first-timers land at Adamas Port and make the mistake of staying there. Don't. Take the 10-minute bus from Adamas to Plaka and check in first before deciding anything else. The view from Kastro at the top of Plaka, which you can reach on foot in 8 minutes from the main plateia, gives you the island in one shot.
Rent a car on day one. The KTEL bus is fine for Plaka and Triovasalos, but Sarakiniko is a 15-minute drive from Adamas and has no convenient bus stop near the rocks. Firopotamos, one of the prettiest fishing villages on the island, is only reachable by car or a long walk on a dirt road. You'll lose at least two beach days without wheels.
Where to eat like a local in Milos
Skip the tavernas on Miaouli Street in Adamas entirely. They're priced for tourists who just got off the ferry and don't know better yet. The real eating is at Pollonia waterfront, where places like Armenaki and the fish tavernas directly on the harbour serve catch-of-the-day at honest prices, around €14-22 for a main.
In Plaka, the small plateia near the church of Panagia Korfiatissa has a handful of good spots for breakfast and ouzo. Mikro Cafe on the main lane opens from 8am and does proper Greek coffee for €2. For dinner with views, book a table at Utopia Cafe above the Kastro alley at least a day ahead in summer.
The truth about Milos beaches
Sarakiniko is the most photographed beach in Greece right now, and it shows. By 10am in August, the white pumice rocks are packed. Go at 7am or after 5pm if you want a photo without 200 people in it. The water is deep and clear but not calm enough for young kids on windy days.
Provatas on the south coast is consistently calm, shallower, and has actual sand. It takes about 20 minutes by car from Adamas. Paliorema is a short drive further and rarely crowded even in peak season, partly because the road is rough. Firopotamos Bay in the north has those iconic colourful boat garages and calm, shallow water perfect for a slower afternoon.
Plaka vs Adamas: which base works for you
Adamas is practical. The ferry dock, the rental car agencies, the supermarkets, and the main bus terminus are all within a 5-minute walk of each other. If you're arriving late or leaving early, staying in Adamas saves you a taxi. Budget hotels here start from $55/night.
Plaka is where the island actually looks like a Greek island. The white houses on the hill above Tripiti, the Kastro at the top, the sunset from Thalassitra. it's all within a 10-minute walk of a good hotel. You're paying $130-230/night for mid-range rooms here, but the atmosphere is worth the gap. And Adamas is only 8 minutes by car if you need the port.
How to do the Kleftiko boat trip without regret
Kleftiko sea caves on the southwest coast are only reachable by boat. Day trips depart from Adamas Port daily in summer, usually leaving at 9-10am and returning by 6pm. Cost runs €45-65 per person including lunch. Book the day before, not the morning of. good boats sell out fast and the cheap ones aren't worth the price cut.
The half-day trip is not worth it. You get 45 minutes at Kleftiko and miss the swimming stops at Tsigrado and Gerakas. Go for the full day. If you get seasick easily, sit at the back of the boat and take medication before boarding. The stretch around Akrotiri Cape has real chop in the afternoons when the meltemi picks up.
Milos for history buffs: what actually matters
The Catacombs of Milos near Tripiti are one of the best-preserved early Christian burial sites in the Mediterranean, with 2,000+ individual tombs carved into the hillside. Entry costs €6 and guided tours run every 20 minutes. The site is 5 minutes by car from Plaka and almost nobody spends enough time here.
The spot where the Venus de Milo was discovered in 1820 is marked in a field near Tripiti, about 300 metres below the Kastro path. It's just a stone marker, but it puts the whole Louvre story into context. The small Archaeological Museum of Milos in Plaka's plateia is free and has decent casts of the original along with mining artefacts from the island's sulphur and obsidian history.

Plaka sits on a ridge above the bay and looks the way most people imagine a Cycladic island should look. Blue-doored alleys, whitewashed walls, a Venetian Kastro at the top. It's not just for photos either. the village has real life in it year-round, with locals, a morning market near the plateia, and tavernas that don't exclusively cater to tourists.
Triovasalos is technically a separate village but sits just below Plaka on the hillside, about 5 minutes walk down. It's quieter, slightly cheaper, and has better road access. Althea Milos in Triovasalos is positioned on the ridge with full bay views and one of the better hotel terraces on the island.
Hotels here run $130-420/night depending on the property. It's the most expensive base on Milos, but the gap versus Adamas is justified. Adamas is 8 minutes by car. Parking in Plaka village itself is limited, so staying at a hotel with private parking matters more than people expect.

Adamas is the island's main port and where almost every visitor arrives. It has the most hotels, the most restaurants, and the most noise. The area directly on Miaouli Street by the ferry dock is the worst of it. diesel fumes, tourist shops, and rooms that charge Plaka prices for port-town quality.

Seriously. Milos has maybe 8-10 car rental agencies total, most of them clustered on the road behind Adamas Port near Miaouli Street. In July and August, cars sell out faster than hotel rooms. The Adamas sunset trap
Everyone in Adamas watches the sunset from the port waterfront. It's fine. But the actual sunset view. the one worth your time. is from the Kastro at the top of Plaka, about 40 minutes by bus or 10 minutes by car from Adamas. It's not even close. And there's no crowd control issue at Kastro the way there is at Santorini's Oia, so you can actually enjoy it.
Ferry timing affects your first and last night
Piraeus-Milos fast ferries arrive in Adamas between 7-10am or late evening depending on the route. If you're arriving after 9pm, stay your first night in Adamas: driving dark unfamiliar roads to Plaka or Pollonia with bags is not a great start. Sarakiniko: go early or go late
