First time in Mykonos: where to actually stay
Mykonos Town (Chora) is the obvious base and it's obvious for good reason. You're within walking distance of Little Venice, the Windmills, the Archaeological Museum, and the best stretch of restaurants on Matogianni Street. Everything else on the island is a bus or taxi from here.
The trap first-timers fall into: booking a 'Mykonos Town' hotel that's actually 2 kilometers out toward Tourlos or Agios Stefanos. Check the exact address before you book. If it's not within a 15-minute walk of the Windmills of Kato Mili, you're not really in town.
Mykonos on a budget: it's possible, just barely
Yes, you can do Mykonos without spending $400 a night. Carbonaki Hotel on Matogianni Street comes in at $55-90/night and puts you dead-center in Chora. Hotel Philippi in Chora is another solid option at $70-105/night with a garden courtyard that most people walk past without knowing it exists.
The savings elsewhere matter too. Eat lunch at the tavernas in Ano Mera village instead of the tourist-facing spots near the Old Port. you'll pay half the price for better food. Bus to the beaches instead of taxis. A KTEL bus to Ornos from Fabrika Square costs €2, not €12.
Luxury in Mykonos: what actually justifies the price
Cavo Tagoo perched above Mykonos Town at $420-950/night is the benchmark. The infinity pool appears to float over the Aegean, service is consistent, and the location above Tagoo means you get the view without the port noise. Santa Marina in Ornos Bay at $560-1,400/night is the other tier. private beach, full resort facilities, the works.
Don't book luxury just because you can. If you're planning to be out from 10am to 2am every day, spend less on the room and more on experiences. But if the hotel IS the experience. sunsets from your terrace, in-pool dining, the full Mykonos fantasy. Cavo Tagoo earns every euro.
Mykonos with kids: the areas that actually work
Ornos is the answer. The beach is sheltered, the water is calm, and it's a genuine village with a supermarket and family-friendly tavernas. It's 10-15 minutes by bus from Fabrika Square in Chora. Apaggio Hotel in Ornos is built for families with connecting rooms and beach access 5 minutes on foot.
Avoid the Old Port area for families. it's chaotic during ferry arrivals and turns into a late-night crowd zone after 11pm. The School of Fine Arts District in Chora is quieter if you want to be in town but away from the noise. Agios Ioannis is another calm coastal option, particularly good for older kids who want snorkeling.
The party scene and where to sleep near it (without hating yourself)
Paradise Beach and Super Paradise Beach are the epicenter of Mykonos nightlife. Clubs like Cavo Paradiso run until well past sunrise in summer. If that's your goal, book near Paraga or Platis Gialos. you'll save 30 minutes of late-night transfer. But these areas have very limited vetted hotel options at reasonable prices.
A smarter play: stay in Chora near the School of Fine Arts District or above Megali Ammos, and take taxis to the party beaches. You're 20-25 minutes and €15-20 each way by taxi. You get to sleep in a real hotel room and join the party on your schedule, not the hotel's.
Shoulder season Mykonos: the version most people miss
Late May and September are genuinely the best weeks to visit Mykonos. Temperatures are 23-27°C, the beaches are swimmable, and the island isn't at full-capacity chaos. Hotel prices in Chora drop from peak-July rates to something reasonable. mid-range hotels go from $200+ down to $120-160/night.
September is particularly good. Most beach clubs still operate, restaurants are fully open, and the ferry crowds from Athens thin out significantly after the Greek school year starts. Delos day trips from the Old Port are less crowded too. the archaeological site there is one of the most important in Greece, and it's genuinely better without 800 people on the path.

Chora is where Mykonos earns its reputation. The whitewashed alleyways around Matogianni Street, the waterfront at Little Venice, the iconic Windmills of Kato Mili. it's all here and it's all walkable. Six of our ten vetted hotels sit in or directly above this neighborhood.
The price spread is enormous. You can sleep 5 minutes from the Windmills for $55/night at Carbonaki, or splash out $350/night at Elysium in the School of Fine Arts District for a pool terrace and panoramic Aegean views. Both are legitimate choices depending on what you want from the trip.
One warning: the alleys around the Old Port get genuinely loud from 11pm onward in summer. If you're a light sleeper, pick a hotel toward the upper part of Chora. around the School of Fine Arts District or above Megali Ammos beach. rather than the port-side streets.

Ornos sits about 3 kilometers south of Chora and functions like its own small resort village.
