Navagio Beach: How to Do It Right
Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach) has a rusted freighter stranded on white pebbles under 300m limestone cliffs. The boat-only access means the beach fills with day-trippers between 10am and 4pm in summer. Take the first or last boat. The first morning boat from Agios Nikolaos leaves at 7:30am and has the beach to yourself for an hour.
The clifftop viewpoint is accessible by road from the north coast and is free. But you can't swim from the viewpoint. The beach itself is pebble (not sand) and the water is impossibly clear. Don't leave any rubbish on the beach: the turtle protection program monitors the entire north coast.
The Vassilikos Peninsula: Zakynthos's Best Beaches
The Vassilikos Peninsula south of Zakynthos Town has Gerakas, Porto Zante, Dafni, and Banana Beach on a 15km stretch. Gerakas has the finest sand and best water clarity. It's also a Caretta caretta nesting beach so certain sections are roped off June-August. The beach wardens are friendly about explaining the turtle situation.
Porto Zante Villas and Spa sits on its own private beach here at $450-900/night. Lesante Blu is at Amboula Beach. For those without the luxury budget, Gerakas Beach is public and free to use outside nesting zones. A car is essential for this area as public transport is limited.
Zakynthos Town: More Than a Transit Hub
Zakynthos Town (Zante Town) was rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake in its original Venetian layout. The Church of Saint Dionysios (patron saint of the island) on the southern harbor is worth 45 minutes. The Byzantine Museum has 14th-17th century icon paintings from destroyed churches. The Venetian castle hill above town has panoramic views.
The Bochali area above the castle has sunset bars and tavernas that are genuinely pleasant without the package-tourist vibe of Laganas. Hotel Palatino sits in the town center at $55-85/night. Diana Hotel on the waterfront at $110-155 is the better value pick with sea views.
Sea Turtle Conservation: What You Can and Cannot Do
Zakynthos National Marine Park protects Mediterranean Loggerhead sea turtles nesting at Laganas Bay and Gerakas Beach. During nesting season (June-August), rules are enforced: no beach access to certain sections at night, no bright lights on nesting beaches, 10mph boat speed limit in the bay.
Violations carry fines. But the official park boat tours (booked through licensed operators, not beach tout operators) are genuinely fascinating. You see nesting females from 50m distance. Children especially find it memorable. Avoid any tour operator who guarantees touching or close-up photography.
Blue Caves at Cape Skinari
The Blue Caves on Zakynthos's northwest tip are sea caves carved into the white limestone cliffs. Daylight refracts through the water and makes everything blue. Boat tours from Agios Nikolaos port run $15-25 (30-40 minutes return). Best light is 9am-11am when the sun angle is right.
You can swim inside the caves from the boat. The water is extremely clear and calm on most days. Combine the Blue Caves with Navagio Beach in a 4-hour morning trip from Cape Skinari. Some tours do both for $30-40.
Getting Around Zakynthos Without a Car
KTEL buses connect Zakynthos Town with Laganas, Tsilivi, Alykes, and Vassilikos. Frequency drops to 2-3 times daily in shoulder season. Taxis from the town center to Tsilivi cost $15-20, to Vassilikos $25-35. Renting an ATV ($25-35/day) covers most beaches but struggles with mountain roads.
For Navagio, you must take a boat regardless of your base. Boat tours from Zakynthos Town port include transport: a 4-5 hour excursion that covers Navagio and Blue Caves from $30-40. Excursion boats also run from Agios Nikolaos (north coast) and Porto Vromi for shorter, cheaper trips.

May is excellent. Warm enough for swimming (sea: 20C), low prices, no crowds at Navagio. The island is green from winter rains. Sea turtle nesting hasn't started so Laganas and Gerakas beaches are fully accessible.
Summer (Jun-Aug)
July and August are extremely busy. Navagio Beach has 2,000+ day-trippers daily. Hotel prices peak. Sea turtle nesting restrictions apply at Laganas and Gerakas. But the water is warmest (26C) and the evenings are perfect.
Fall (Sep-Oct)
September is arguably the best month. Sea still warm (24C), crowds drop significantly after September 1, hotel prices fall 20-30%, and Navagio morning boats have the beach nearly to themselves. October is quieter still but some hotels start closing.
Winter (Nov-Mar)
Most beach hotels close November through March. Zakynthos Town stays open year-round. The island is genuinely beautiful in winter rain with green hills and empty beaches. Good for hiking. Very few tourists.

Book Laganas hotels away from the main strip
Laganas's main road parallel to the beach is loud until 3-4am in summer. Ionian Star Hotel on the Laganas Beach Strip should be booked in a room facing the sea, not the road. Ask specifically for a sea-facing room. The street noise from the bar strip can make sleep difficult without ear plugs.
Respect sea turtle rules at Gerakas and Laganas
Gerakas and Laganas beaches are designated turtle nesting areas. June through August: no beach access before 7am, no beach furniture beyond marked zones, no light sources facing the sea at night. Wardens are on the beach to explain the rules. Fines apply to violations. The turtle population is recovering and the restrictions work.

Check ferry schedules 24 hours before departure
The Killini-Zakynthos ferry can be cancelled or delayed in strong winds (especially October-March). Check Ionian Pelagos or Zakynthos Ferries websites the day before. If you have a tight flight connection, fly Zakynthos-Athens rather than taking the ferry to Patras then driving. The 45-minute flight costs $60-120 and removes weather risk.
