Making the Most of Tumon Bay Beach
Tumon Bay beach is a public amenity even if it's fronted by hotels. The beach access points between the Hilton and Hyatt are open to everyone. Ypao Beach Park at the south end of Tumon is a public park with picnic facilities and the best free snorkeling area on the bay.
Water sports operators on the beach rent equipment from 9am-5pm. Parasailing costs $65-75 per flight from the Tumon beach operator area outside the Outrigger Hotel. For calmer conditions, go in the morning: afternoon trade winds can make the bay choppy.
Guam's History: WWII Pacific Campaign
Guam was occupied by Japan from December 1941 to July 1944. The War in the Pacific National Historical Park maintains 7 sites across the island, with the visitor center in Asan (15 minutes from Tumon by car). The Guam Museum in Hagatna covers both Chamorro culture and the WWII history.
The Piti Bomb Holes (underwater WWII munitions dump, now a fish habitat) are a popular dive site near Apra Harbor. Most Tumon dive shops include this in their site rotation. Two Lovers Point has a small museum about the American liberation. The Japanese WWII gun batteries at Fort Apugan above Tumon are a short drive.
Chamorro Culture and Local Experiences
Hagatna (Agana), Guam's capital, is 10 minutes from Tumon by taxi. The Chamorro Village Wednesday Night Market from 6-9pm has local food vendors (kelaguen, red rice, empanadas), craft stalls, and live music. It's the most authentic local experience in the Tumon area.
The Latte Stone Park near the Government House preserves ancient CHamoru (indigenous Chamorro) pillar stones used as building foundations. The Guam Museum on Archbishop Flores Street has an excellent free permanent collection on Chamorro history and culture. Both are 15 minutes from Tumon hotels.
Shopping in Tumon: Duty-Free and Outlets
T Galleria by DFS on Marine Drive in Upper Tumon is the main duty-free complex. Luxury brands (Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Burberry) are 10-25% cheaper here than in Japan for Japanese visitors. Guam Premium Outlets near the Micronesia Mall has US outlet brands (Coach, Polo, Tommy Hilfiger) at 20-40% below mainland retail.
There's no general sales tax on Guam (the Guam Education and Empowerment Act taxes vary by product but basics are cheaper than US states). Electronics and alcohol are particularly good value. Duty-free allowances for imports back to Japan and Korea are generous.
Day Trips from Tumon
Cocos Island Lagoon (south Guam, 45 minutes by car) has the island's best snorkeling and is a marine sanctuary. Day trips from Tumon operators run $60-90 including snorkel equipment and boat transfer. The water clarity here is significantly better than Tumon Bay.
Two Lovers Point is 10 minutes from Tumon: a 120m limestone cliff with a legend (two Chamorro lovers jumped from the cliff rather than be separated by a Spanish soldier) and the best Pacific views on the island. The viewing platform has a fence so it's safe. Entry is $3. Combine with a car drive south to see the Japanese war bunkers at Fort Apugan.
Pacific Islands Club Guam: What's Included
Pacific Islands Club (PIC) is a self-contained resort that charges room rates of $160-220/night but includes almost all activities: water park (3 pools, slides, wave pool), beach water sports (kayaks, paddleboards, windsurfing, snorkeling), tennis courts, and evening entertainment.
For families and couples who want organized activities, PIC can be better value than paying a la carte at other resorts. The water park alone would cost $40-60/person at a standalone facility. PIC's beach area is managed separately from Tumon Bay itself with dedicated water sports staff.

Tumon Bay is Guam's 3km hotel strip along the island's west coast. Upper Tumon has the duty-free Mall and shopping centers. South of Tumon is Tamuning (commercial) and the airport. The rest of Guam is more rural and less touristed.

Ypao Beach Park at the south end of Tumon Bay is a free public park with the best snorkeling on the immediate Tumon Bay area. Snorkel equipment rental is available from beach vendors ($10-15/day). The coral is healthier here than in front of the large resort hotels. Go at high tide for best water depth.
The Wednesday Chamorro Village market is the best night out
Hagatna's Chamorro Village Wednesday Night Market runs 6-9pm. Red rice, empanadas, kelaguen chicken, and fresh coconut drinks cost $3-8 per item. Live Chamorro music. A taxi from Tumon costs $15-20 each way. Ask your hotel front desk to recommend a reliable taxi driver for the evening. Far better than resort restaurant prices.
Typhoon season travel insurance is non-negotiable
If you're visiting July-November, buy detailed travel insurance that covers typhoon cancellation and disruption.
