City Center wins on convenience. Nagyerdő wins on atmosphere. If you're planning spa days at Aquaticum or long walks through the park on Ady Endre fasor, Nagyerdő is worth the slight distance from the city core.
The tram ride between the two areas is 15 minutes. But if you're in Nagyerdő for a conference at the university campus on Egyetem sugárút, you'll barely need to go downtown at all. Know your trip before you pick your base.
Debrecen on a tight budget

If you're coming for the Carnival, book on Kossuth tér or Piac utca. The parade route runs through this area and you'll want to walk, not scramble for trams. Nagyerdő hotels are cheaper that week but you'll be fighting tram line 1 crowds morning and evening.
Business travel in Debrecen

If you arrive by train and need somewhere for one night, fine. But for any stay of 2+ nights, walk 10 minutes north to Piac utca and book something properly. The tram gets you back to the station in 5 minutes.

Mid-range hotels on Piac utca drop back to their base rates of $100-155/night. October turns Nagyerdő's park into something worth walking through, and it costs you nothing extra.
Winter (December-February)
Winter is the cheapest season by a clear margin. Hotel Silver drops to around $45/night and even Divinus Hotel in Nagyerdő is more accessible at $130/night. December has a proper Christmas market on Kossuth tér that runs until around December 23rd. Cold and grey after that, but the spa hotels in Nagyerdő suddenly make a lot of sense.
