Stay in the Old Town if you're here for history, wine, and walking. You're 4 minutes from Dobó Square, 7 minutes from Eger Castle, and within easy reach of every good restaurant on Érsek utca and Széchenyi utca. Prices range from $48 at Hotel Minaret up to $290 at Eger Hotel Palatinus. so there's a real spread here.
Choose the Thermal Bath District only if the Strand or the spa scene is your whole reason for coming. It's about 2.5 km from the Old Town core, which sounds fine until you've done it three times in a day. Agria Park Hotel here runs $160-220/night and does what it promises, but don't expect a romantic stroll to dinner.
How to do the Szépasszony-völgy wine cellars properly
The Valley of Beautiful Women is about a 20-minute walk southwest from Dobó Square, down Király utca and past the edge of the city. There are over 30 cellars cut into the hillside, and most charge 300-600 HUF per glass of Egri Bikavér. Go on a weekday afternoon. weekends get loud fast.
Don't eat before you go. The cellar owners usually have bread, cheese, and sausage to buy alongside the wine, and that's the right way to do it. If you're staying at Romantik Hotel Melánia, you're practically next door. a serious advantage.
The honest guide to Eger Castle and the Castle Quarter
Eger Castle sits above the city on a hill at the top of Vár köz, and the walk up from the Old Town takes about 8 minutes from Dobó Square. Entry costs around 2,600 HUF for adults. The views over the city from the ramparts are the payoff. go in the morning before tour groups arrive.
The Castle Quarter hotels like Kodmon Hotel charge a premium ($175-230/night) for a reason: you're right at the base of the castle walls with almost no tourist foot traffic in the evenings. It's quieter than central Dobó Square and genuinely feels like you have the city to yourself after 8 pm.
Getting around Eger: what actually works
Walk everywhere in the Old Town and Castle Quarter. Seriously, the center is compact. Dobó Square to the Basilica on Pyrker tér is 6 minutes on foot. The Minaret at the top of Knézich Károly utca is 3 minutes from the square. A taxi from the train station to any central hotel costs 1,500-2,000 HUF.
For the Thermal Bath District and Szépasszony-völgy, local bus routes cover both. Bus 11 and 12 run from the town center out toward the thermal baths. Don't rent a car in the city. Old Town parking is nearly impossible, and fines are around 10,000-15,000 HUF.
When Eger hotel prices spike (and when to go instead)
The Eger Wine Festival in mid-September fills every hotel in the city and prices jump 35-50% overnight. Book 3-4 months ahead if you're going then, or accept paying $200-250/night for rooms that would normally cost $130. The same happens during Hungarian national holidays in August.
Late May and early June are the real sweet spot. Temperatures hit 20-25°C, the Szépasszony-völgy cellars are open, crowds are manageable, and mid-range hotels near Dobó Square run $100-160/night. October is underrated too. cool, quiet, and the Bull's Blood harvest is fresh.
What to skip in Eger (we've seen this mistake too many times)
Skip any hotel listed as 'near the station' unless the price is genuinely exceptional. The area around Eger Vasútállomás is flat, bland, and a 20-minute walk from anything worth seeing. We've seen travelers book there thinking they're saving time. they're not.
Also skip the overhyped souvenir shops along the lower stretch of Széchenyi utca. For actual local wine to take home, go directly to the cellars in the Szépasszony-völgy or to the Buttler Winery. You'll pay less and get something worth drinking.

Evenings in the Old Town are genuinely pleasant. The tourist crowds thin out after dinner, and the lit-up castle walls visible from Dobó Square are one of those views that doesn't get old. This is Eger at its best.

Dobó István Square is the heart of Eger, and the Castle Quarter climbs immediately above it.
