Sopron's Old Town: The Medieval Core
The elliptical medieval wall that rings Sopron's old town is not a reconstruction. These are original fortifications, and the streets inside them are still lived in. Fő tér is the central square, anchored by the Firewatch Tower at its north end, which you can climb for 1,000 HUF and good views across the Lővér Hills.
Hotel Wollner on Templom utca and Palatinus on Új utca are the two best options inside the walls. Both are in restored historic buildings within 3 minutes on foot of every major sight. The Old Synagogue on Új utca is one of the most significant Gothic Jewish buildings surviving in Central Europe.
Friday and Saturday evenings, the side streets around Fő tér fill with Viennese day-trippers eating at the better restaurants. Book ahead for Saturday night dining at Corvus Borétterem unless you want to eat early or late.
Lővér Hills: Forest and Spa South of the City
The wooded hills immediately south of Sopron are a proper forest, not a park. Walking trails connect Hotel Sopron and Lővér Hotel through pine and oak forest, with good views toward Austria and Lake Fertő on clear days. The area is quiet enough to feel genuinely removed from the city while still being a 10-minute drive to the old town.
Lővér Hotel has the best spa in this neighbourhood: thermal pools, Finnish sauna, and treatment rooms. Hotel Sopron caters more to families with a good outdoor pool and sports facilities. Both have their own restaurants which saves the driving back to town for dinner.
The hills are at their best in autumn when the deciduous trees turn. The forest road linking the two hotels to the southern edge of the old town takes about 30 minutes on foot.
Day Trip: Sárvár Thermal Baths
Sárvár is 45 minutes east of Sopron on the M85 and worth a full day for the thermal complex alone. The Sárvár Spa has 16 pools including outdoor thermal baths, indoor lap pools, and a substantial wellness section. Day passes cost roughly 4,500-6,500 HUF ($13-19) depending on the day and duration.
Best Western Plus Termal Hotel Sárvár is the obvious accommodation choice if you want overnight access. The castle in the center of Sárvár (Nádasdy Castle) is free to enter and holds a small historical museum. The town itself is unremarkable outside these two attractions.
Go on a weekday. Weekend crowds from Budapest and Vienna fill the pools and waiting times for the saunas grow long. The drive on the M85 is easy and the road is well-signposted.
Sopron Wine Country
Sopron is one of Hungary's 22 wine regions, producing primarily red wines from the Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch) grape. The appellations blur across the Austrian border where the same grape makes Burgenland Blaufränkisch. This cross-border wine culture is one of the more interesting aspects of the region.
The wine cellars along Bécsi út on the way out of town toward Austria sell local bottles direct for a fraction of restaurant prices. Pfneiszl and Weninger are the two names worth remembering. The Rust area across the border adds Ruster Ausbruch dessert wine to the tasting circuit for sweet wine enthusiasts.
October is harvest time and several local producers run small events and open-cellar weekends during the vendemmia season. Ask at Hotel Palatinus or Wollner reception for current cellar schedules.
Getting Around Sopron and the Region
The old town itself is walkable. Sopron is a compact city and the main attractions fit within a 20-minute walking loop. The train station is 10 minutes on foot from Fő tér through Széchenyi tér. Taxis are inexpensive by Western European standards, roughly 800-1,500 HUF for any central journey.
A car is genuinely useful for the Lővér Hills hotels, the Sárvár and Bükfürdő day trips, and for crossing into Austria. Car rental is available at the train station and at several agencies along Győri út. Parking inside the old town walls is restricted and mostly for residents.
Trains run several times daily to Vienna (1 hour), Győr (1.5 hours), and Budapest (3 hours via Győr). The regional bus system covers Bükfürdő and Kőszeg but requires patience with scheduling.
Cross-Border Day: Rust and Neusiedler See
Lake Fertő (Neusiedler See in German) straddles the Hungarian-Austrian border and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique steppe landscape and bird migration importance. The Austrian side, particularly around Rust, is the more developed end for tourism.
Rust is a small baroque wine town with stork nests on the chimney tops and a lakefront promenade with cycling paths. The Steiner Schloss Hotel there is one of the best hotel experiences within an hour of Sopron. Dinner at the restaurant is worth reserving even for a day-trip.
EU citizens need no documentation to cross. Non-EU visitors on a Schengen visa cover both sides automatically. The border crossing on the Sopron-Rust road takes under a minute. Cycling between the two towns along the lake shore takes about 90 minutes each way on well-marked paths.

Fő tér, the Firewatch Tower, the Old Synagogue on Új utca, and the baroque townhouses that line Templom utca are all within a 10-minute walk of each other. Hotel Wollner and Palatinus are the standout accommodation options inside the walls.
It is the right neighborhood for a first visit. The streets are quiet after dark once the restaurants close around 10pm. Morning coffee at one of the small cafes on Orsolya tér before the tourist groups arrive is one of the better small-city pleasures in Hungary.
