Fort Kochi vs. Ernakulam: where to actually stay
Fort Kochi is the obvious answer and it's obvious for good reason. Princess Street and Burgher Street are lined with heritage guesthouses, good cafes, and galleries. you're 8 minutes walk from the Chinese Fishing Nets and 12 minutes from Jew Town on Synagogue Lane in Mattancherry. Ernakulam, across the water, is the commercial city: fine if you need to be near the railway station, but sterile compared to the Fort.
The ferry between Fort Kochi and Ernakulam takes 10 minutes and costs under $0.20. So even if you're based in Fort Kochi, you're never far from the mainland. One real insider move: book the Fort Kochi side for your first night so you arrive into the heritage quarter, not into traffic on MG Road.
Munnar hill stations: Pothamedu vs. town center
Munnar town itself is a mess of traffic, honking jeeps, and tourist shops. Don't stay there. Pothamedu, 4 km west of town, sits at 1,600 meters and has clear views across tea estates toward Rajamala and the Eravikulam peaks. That's where Windermere Estate is, and it's the right call. Pallivasal, 6 km from town on the Mattupetty Road, is where Fragrant Nature sits: quieter, cooler, and a better base for morning walks.
Getting into Munnar town from either area takes 15-20 minutes by auto-rickshaw and costs $1-2. The real move is renting a scooter for $8-10/day and doing the Mattupetty Dam loop yourself in the morning before the jeep tours arrive. Most hotel stays in Munnar include breakfast; dinners are better eaten in town at the small family-run spots near the KSRTC bus stand.
Backwaters 101: houseboats vs. land resorts
The houseboat experience is iconic and often underwhelming. You'll share Punnamada Lake with 400 other boats, the engine noise is constant at midday, and most operators cut corners on the food. One night is enough to say you did it. Budget $100-160/night for a decent certified houseboat departing from Finishing Point jetty in Alappuzha.
For a better backwater experience, base yourself at Kumarakom Lake Resort on the Vembanad Lake shore instead. You get private canoe access into the narrow kuttanad canals, silence in the mornings, and actual comfort at night. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary entrance is 500 meters from the resort. It costs more. $200-320/night. but you'll use every bit of it.
Kovalam vs. Varkala: picking the right beach
Kovalam gets more tourists and more infrastructure. Lighthouse Beach and Hawah Beach are busy from October through March, with the red-and-white lighthouse on the southern headland being the main landmark. Vana Belle sits on Samudra Beach, the quieter northern stretch, which is why it works as a luxury property. You're away from the beach shack strip but only 5 minutes by car from it.
Varkala, 54 km north of Kovalam, is a cliff beach with a completely different character. The North Cliff area has guesthouses right on the edge overlooking the Arabian Sea. It's better for solo travelers and budget stays. Kovalam suits you better if you want resort infrastructure and don't mind paying for it.
Ayurveda in Kerala: what's real, what's not
Kerala is the origin state of Ayurveda and there are maybe 50 genuinely qualified centers in the whole state. Most beach-town 'Ayurveda' is just massage marketed with Sanskrit words. Real Ayurveda requires a physician consultation, a dosha assessment, and a treatment plan. Somatheeram on Chowara Beach, 9 km south of Kovalam, has been running accredited programs since 1985 and employs BAMS-qualified doctors on site.
Niraamaya Retreats Surya Samudra, 16 km from Thiruvananthapuram city center in Pulinkudi, pairs Ayurveda with a genuinely stunning rocky coastline property. Minimum recommended stay for real therapeutic benefit is 7 nights. Budget $130-600/night depending on property and program level. Anything cheaper than $80/night claiming clinical Ayurveda is selling you a massage.
When Kerala's monsoon works in your favor
The Southwest Monsoon hits Kerala first in India, typically around June 1 near Thiruvananthapuram, and the state turns an absurd shade of green within two weeks. Some travelers specifically come for this. The waterfalls above Munnar, particularly Attukal Falls on the Rajamala Road, are only worth visiting during or just after the rains.
Hotel prices drop 30-40% during June through August. Windermere Estate in Pothamedu, for example, runs $140-195/night in peak season and closer to $90-110/night in July. The catch: outdoor activities are limited, houseboat services reduce frequency, and some smaller resorts close entirely. If you're combining an Ayurveda detox with Kerala travel, monsoon is actually the ideal time. Ayurvedic treatments are traditionally most effective during this season.
