Mall Road and The Ridge: Shimla's Colonial Heart
The 1.3-kilometer pedestrian Mall Road is the organizing spine of Shimla. Christ Church at the eastern end of The Ridge is the most recognizable building, a neo-Gothic structure from 1857 still holding services. Scandal Point at the western junction is where the old British officers' stories were supposedly exchanged.
Hotel Combermere and Clarkes Hotel both sit on or just off Mall Road. Clarkes, operating since 1898, has the better historic atmosphere with wood-paneled corridors that feel like they have not been extensively renovated, which is either atmospheric or uncomfortable depending on your perspective.
Evening on Mall Road after 5pm, when the day-trippers thin out, is the best time to walk it. The mountain air cools, the Himalayan peaks catch the last light, and the promenade has a quality of easy elegance that justifies the hill station's old reputation.
Jakhu Hill: Temple, Monkeys, and Views
Jakhu Hill rises 300 meters above Mall Road and is topped with a Hanuman temple and a 33-meter statue that is visible from across the city. The walk up through oak forest from the Ridge takes 45-60 minutes and passes dozens of rhesus macaques who have no fear of humans.
The monkey situation is not a joke. They are aggressive and persistent. Do not carry visible food. Strap your bag shut. Remove sunglasses before getting close to groups of them. Walking sticks are available for rent at the base for 50 rupees and work as a deterrent.
The views from Jakhu summit on a clear morning stretch to the Himalayan snow peaks in the distance, including Shrikhand Mahadev if conditions are ideal. Come early before the haze builds.
Mashobra: Forest Luxury 13km from Town
Mashobra is a small village in deep deodar cedar forest 13 kilometers from Shimla on the road toward Kufri. Wildflower Hall, the Oberoi property here, is the best hotel in the wider Shimla area by a significant margin. At 8,250 feet, it is cooler than Shimla town even in the peak of summer.
The hotel organizes guided forest walks and bird-watching sessions led by trained naturalists, which is a different experience from the commercial hill station atmosphere of Mall Road. The indoor heated pool and Oberoi Spa make it fully self-contained.
Getting into Shimla from Mashobra takes 25-30 minutes by taxi and the hotel can arrange car services. Most guests do a day trip to Mall Road rather than staying in town.
Woodville Palace: The Authentic Heritage Experience
Woodville Palace on Battlements Road was once the private home of the Raja of Jubbal, and unlike some heritage hotels that retrofit the claim, this one is genuine. The deodar cedar orchard and the antique-furnished rooms have not been stripped of their idiosyncratic character in favor of clean branded interiors.
Set meals at scheduled hours, the wooden billiard room, and the walls of old photographs create a genuinely lived-in quality. Guests looking for consistent modern amenities and flexible dining will be frustrated. Guests who want to understand what a Raj-era hill station property actually felt like will enjoy this.
It is 15 minutes by foot from Mall Road through the back lanes of Battlements Road. Ask for directions at the hotel because the approach is not signposted.
Getting Around Shimla
Mall Road and The Ridge are pedestrian-only. Most of central Shimla is walkable if you are comfortable with steep gradients. Porters (man-carriers) are the traditional solution for luggage since vehicles cannot access many hotel entrances directly.
Taxis from the Cart Road stands cover the town for 100-300 rupees per journey. For Kufri it is about 600-800 rupees one way. The city buses run a circular route connecting the main areas every 15-20 minutes for 10-15 rupees. Auto-rickshaws are not common because of the terrain.
The toy train from Shimla station on Cart Road connects to Kalka with multiple services daily. Book ahead on IRCTC.co.in especially in April-June when availability is tight.
Shopping in Shimla: What to Buy and Where
Lakkar Bazaar is the local market east of The Ridge and the most authentic shopping area in the city. Wooden crafts, wool shawls, and local Himachali textiles are sold at non-tourist prices. Avoid the identical-looking shops on western Mall Road which target day visitors with marked-up goods.
The Himachal Pradesh State Emporium on The Mall is government-run and has fixed prices for genuine local handicrafts including pashmina, kullu shawls, and wooden artwork. It is not exciting to browse but the quality and authenticity are guaranteed.
Shimla's apple orchards supply the best fresh apple products. Look for local apple juice and dried apple chips at the town market stalls in September and October during harvest season.
