First-timer's guide to picking your island
Most people should land on Gili Trawangan first. It has the infrastructure, the dive operators clustered around the north coast near Manta Dive, the best west-facing beaches for sunsets, and hotel options from Woodstock-style budget bunks all the way up to Ayana Villas at $280-420/night.
Gili Air is the smart second choice if you've done Trawangan before or if nightlife sounds like a problem. The south beach strip near Biba Beach Village has restaurants and the vibe is social without being loud. It's a 20-minute public boat from Trawangan's harbor, so you're not isolated.
Where to stay on Gili Trawangan: west vs. east
West beach is the answer for most travelers. Hotels like Pearl of Trawangan and Scallywags sit right on it, and the sunsets are as good as people say. The southwest stretch around Hotel Ombak Sunset is even quieter, with fewer vendors hawking braids and boat trips.
The east coast is where the ferries dock and the party bars are. Some hotels here are fine, but anything within 200 meters of the main harbor strip will have noise issues. Gili Eco Villas punches out of this entirely by sitting in the interior north, surrounded by gardens rather than beach bars. Worth knowing.
The honest dive guide for Gili Islands hotels
If diving is why you're here, stay close to the operators. Manta Dive on Trawangan's north coast is the most established, and staying at their resort saves you 20+ minutes of cidomo transport every morning. Blue Marlin on the west beach strip is the other major option. most west beach hotels are 5-8 minutes walk from it.
Turtle Point off Gili Meno's east coast is one of the most reliable spots to see sea turtles in Indonesia, but the currents around Meno's north beach can catch you off guard. Vila Ombak Gili Meno on the west beach is the best base for Meno diving. calm water, good visibility from May-September, and the on-site team knows the conditions well.
What the 'beachfront' label actually means here
This matters more in the Gili Islands than almost anywhere. 'Beachfront' gets used loosely by a lot of Trawangan properties. Some hotels on the east coast are technically beachfront but face the harbor and a wall of boat traffic. West beach beachfront means something genuinely different: open water, good sand, and that sunset.
Always check which coast a hotel sits on before booking. Pearl of Trawangan and Hotel Ombak Sunset are real west-side beachfront. Vila Ombak Gili Meno on Meno's west beach is the real deal too. If a listing just says 'beachfront' without naming the coast or beach direction, ask specifically. or don't trust it.
Gili Meno: who it's actually for
Gili Meno is the smallest and least developed of the three. There are no ATMs that work reliably, limited restaurant options outside the main hotel strip on the west beach, and the last boat back to Trawangan leaves before dark. That's the whole point for some people. Vila Ombak Gili Meno and Gili Meno Escape are both excellent and genuinely worth the $190-500/night if you want total quiet.
Don't book Meno for more than 3-4 nights on a first visit unless you're specifically here to dive Turtle Point or honeymooning. You will want more options by day 3. The boat to Trawangan takes 15 minutes and public cidomos run regularly from the harbor. so a mixed-island stay works well if you base yourself on Trawangan for the first half.
How to avoid getting gouged on accommodation
The most common mistake is booking a 'central' hotel on Trawangan's main strip without realizing that 'central' means 30 meters from a bar playing techno until 2am. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times. Properties on the strip charge mid-range prices for budget-quality sleep. Walk 10 minutes north toward the Manta Dive area or 15 minutes south toward Ombak Sunset and you immediately get better value.
July and August prices are 30-50% higher than May or September for the same rooms. If you're flexible, late September on Gili Air or Gili Meno gives you near-peak conditions with off-peak rates. Biba Beach Village on Gili Air's south beach, for example, drops noticeably outside of peak school holiday weeks.

West Beach is the reason people come to Trawangan. The sand is white, the water stays calm in the morning, and from about 5pm the whole strip turns into a slow, golden hour that genuinely lives up to the photos. Pearl of Trawangan and Scallywags both sit right on it, and Hotel Ombak Sunset anchors the quieter southwest end.
The walk from the harbor to the west beach hotels is about 20-25 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by cidomo. Once you're here, you don't need to go back to the east side much. Blue Marlin Dive Center is a 6-minute walk north along the beach, and the main restaurant strip is close enough without being on top of you.
Prices here run $110-230/night across our three picks, which reflects the genuine quality gap over the harbor-area hotels. It's not overpriced for what you get. Book west beach rooms facing the ocean specifically. some properties have garden-view rooms at a lower rate, and they're not the same experience.

The north coast and interior north of Trawangan are underrated. Manta Dive Gili T Resort sits on the north coast with its dive center on-site, and it's genuinely one of the best-value hotels on any of the islands at $70-99/night. Gili Eco Villas in the interior north is the most sustainably-run property we reviewed, with open-air bungalows surrounded by organic gardens rather than tourist infrastructure.
You're about 15 minutes walk from the west beach strip from this area, which keeps the noise down significantly. The north coast snorkeling is excellent. turtles are regularly spotted just offshore, and the coral around the north tip of the island is in better shape than the south.
This area suits divers, eco-minded travelers, and anyone who wants a proper retreat without paying Gili Meno prices. Gili Eco Villas at $130-195/night is especially good for couples wanting privacy without total isolation.

A few things to know before you book. The last speedboat back to Trawangan leaves around 4-5pm depending on season. The Gili Meno Bird Park is a 10-minute walk from the main harbor. And if you run out of cash, the nearest reliable ATM is on Gili Trawangan, a 15-minute boat away.
