Pick a hotel on or near Jalan Thamrin or Jalan Sudirman. These two roads are Jakarta's spine and every major attraction, mall, and MRT stop radiates from them. You'll spend a third less on transport than someone staying in, say, Kemang or Pluit.
Grab the MRT from Bundaran HI station and ride it to Dukuh Atas for Blok M connections, or north toward Monas. It costs under Rp 15,000 and saves you from Jakarta's legendary gridlock. We've seen first-timers waste entire half-days in traffic just because they booked a cheap room far from the corridor.
Jakarta for business travelers
The SCBD (Sudirman Central Business District) is where deals get done. If your meetings are around Jalan Jend. Sudirman or Gatot Subroto, staying anywhere else adds unnecessary commute time. Mercure Gatot Subroto puts you right in the thick of it.
Book mid-week rates when you can. Jakarta's business hotels often drop 15-20% on weekends because the corporate crowd clears out. And skip the hotel restaurant for client dinners. Altitude at Grand Indonesia or Lara Djonggrang on Jalan Cik Ditiro will impress far more.
How to avoid Jakarta's hotel rip-offs
Photos of 'Kota Tua-area' hotels are notoriously deceptive. That charming colonial courtyard shot? It's the lobby of the building next door. Always filter for hotels that show room photos, not just heritage street scenes from Fatahillah Square.
Watch the 'service charge plus tax' line at checkout. Jakarta hotels add 21% on top of quoted rates at most four-star and above properties. Where to eat near your Jakarta hotel
If you're in Thamrin, walk 10 minutes east to Jalan Sabang for some of Jakarta's best street food. Nasi goreng stalls start at Rp 25,000 and the sate ayam at the corner cart near the roundabout has been there for 20 years. Grand Indonesia's food court on Level 3 is also genuinely good and air-conditioned.
Staying in Mangga Dua? Head to Mangga Dua Square's food basement for cheap Chinese-Indonesian plates at Rp 30,000-60,000. Glodok, 10 minutes south by Grab, has some of the city's best pork dishes at old-school shophouse restaurants on Jalan Pancoran.
