Senggigi vs. Kuta Lombok: which side of the island?
Senggigi is the north-west coast, easy to reach, with Jalan Raya Senggigi lined with restaurants and tour desks. It's older, slightly faded in places, but functional. Kuta Lombok is the south coast. rawer, faster-developing, and where the surf culture lives.
Pick Senggigi if you want easy Gili Island day trips and reliable evening dining on Mangsit Road. Pick Kuta if you're after Tanjung Aan bay, the Mandalika circuit area, and surf at Gerupuk. Don't try to do both in a 4-night trip. you'll spend half your holiday in a taxi.
The real Lombok beach guide (not the one the hotels want you to read)
Senggigi Beach is decent but not Lombok's best. the water's murkier than the south and the beach vendors can be persistent on the stretch near Batu Bolong Temple. The real beaches are south: Selong Belanak for swimming, Tanjung Aan for the postcard shots, and Mawun for when you want almost nobody around.
Mawun is 20 minutes west of Kuta on a paved road and you'll often find under 20 people there on a weekday. No beach clubs, no vendors, no sun loungers. bring your own water. That's the trade-off on Lombok's best beaches.
Budget Lombok: how to stay well for under $90/night
Two of our 10 picks come in under $90: Sempiak Villas in Selong Belanak ($55-85/night) and Puri Mas Boutique Resort in Senggigi ($70-110/night). Both clear the basic bar most budget options in Lombok fail. clean pools, honest photos, and staff who actually respond to messages.
If you go cheaper than $50 in Senggigi, you're looking at guesthouses on the inland side of Jalan Raya with no air-con and shared bathrooms. Fine for one night, rough for a week. Spend the extra $15-20 and get something vetted.
Lombok luxury: what $300+/night actually buys you here
The Oberoi Beach Resort at Medana Beach in Tanjung is Lombok's benchmark luxury property. private beach, pavilion-style villas, and almost no noise because it's 40 minutes north of Senggigi and deliberately isolated. At $350-600/night, it's not trying to compete on price. It doesn't have to.
Jeeva Beloam Beach Camp near Tanjung Aan is different. tented suites on the East Lombok coast, $280-450/night, with the kind of emptiness you genuinely can't buy in Bali. Both of these are worth the number if you're celebrating something. Neither should be booked just because someone on Instagram made it look cool.
Getting between hotels and beaches without getting ripped off
Grab works reliably in Mataram and most of Senggigi. Past Pemenang heading north toward Tanjung, or south of Kuta toward Selong Belanak, you're in fixed-price negotiation territory. Agree the price before you get in. the going rate from Kuta to the airport is $12-15, and drivers at the taxi rank near Novotel Mandalika will often open at $25.
Scooter rental on Jalan Raya Senggigi runs $7-9/day from any of the shops near Senggigi Square. Bring your international driving permit if you have one. police checkpoints near Mataram's bypass road do check foreigners occasionally. The fine without a permit is around $20, negotiable.
What to know about Sasak culture before you check in
Lombok is a Muslim-majority island. different from Bali in ways that matter for hotel stays. Friday mornings see local staff at prayer, so expect slower service at mid-range hotels between 11:30am and 1pm around mosque areas. During Ramadan (dates shift each year), some restaurants near Mataram's city center close during daylight hours.
Dress modestly outside the resort zones. Near Batu Bolong Temple in Senggigi and at any village market. like Pasar Bertais in Mataram. covered shoulders and knees go a long way. Most hotels in Senggigi are fine with typical resort wear poolside, but the further from the tourist corridor you go, the more it matters.

Senggigi is where most first-time visitors to Lombok land, and for good reason. Jalan Raya Senggigi has everything functional: tour operators, ATMs, pharmacies, and restaurants serving everything from nasi campur to wood-fired pizza. The beach here is accessible and calm enough for swimming, though it peaks out around the stretch by Batu Bolong Temple.
Mangsit, 3 kilometers north of Senggigi proper, is quieter and more upscale. The road narrows, the beach gets less crowded, and that's where Qunci Villas and Jeeva Klui sit. You're 10 minutes by scooter from Senggigi's restaurants but you feel genuinely removed from the noise. Worth the marginal extra distance.
Avoid the inland side of Jalan Bypass north of Mataram. it looks close on a map but you'll be 30 minutes from any beach and surrounded by traffic. The cheap guesthouses around Senggigi Square itself are convenient but noisy on weekend nights when the bars on the main strip run late.

Kuta Lombok (not Bali's Kuta. completely different) is the south coast's base camp. The MotoGP Mandalika circuit brought investment and better roads, which means Jalan Raya Kuta is now lined with cafes and surf shops that weren't there 5 years ago. Novotel Lombok Resort and Villas sits inside the Mandalika complex, which gives you a private beach and polished facilities but puts you slightly outside the Kuta town center. about 10 minutes by scooter to the local warungs and surf rental shops near Pantai Kuta. The trade-off is genuinely peaceful grounds versus convenience.
The beaches west of Kuta. Mawun, Selong Belanak, Tampah. reward anyone willing to ride 20-40 minutes on a scooter. Don't stay east of Kuta toward Gerupuk unless you specifically want boat access to the surf breaks. That end of the bay has limited accommodation and no walking infrastructure.

You're not coming here for convenience. You're coming because Jeeva Beloam's beach is private, the tent suites are genuinely beautiful, and the silence at night is remarkable.
If you stay in this region, rent a car with a driver for the duration. Day rates run $50-70 through hotels or local fixers in Pemenang. There's no reliable Grab coverage, and scootering on the mountain road north of Pemenang after dark requires real confidence.
