Jalan Bisma: The Best Views in Ubud
Jalan Bisma heads west from the central Ubud Palace area and drops down into the Wos River valley. Properties along this road like Komaneka at Bisma and Bisma Eight have terraced rooms and infinity pools facing a wall of jungle. It is the single best position in Ubud for the classic rainforest valley view.
The walk back uphill to central Ubud from the bottom of Bisma takes 15-20 minutes. Both hotels provide shuttle services for guests who do not want to climb. The noise level on Bisma is low compared to Monkey Forest Road, which makes it better for early morning wellness routines.
Bisma Eight's breakfast overlooking the valley is one of the better hotel meals in Ubud, with a wide local and Western spread. Komaneka at Bisma's restaurant is strong for dinner with the same valley view lit differently at night.
Monkey Forest Road: Central Ubud Done Right
Monkey Forest Road runs 1.3 kilometers from the Ubud Palace area south to the Monkey Forest entrance. The road is lined with restaurants, galleries, yoga studios, and shops. It is noisy and busy during the day and this is unavoidable for properties on the road itself.
Puri Garden Hotel just off Monkey Forest Road is the best value option in this corridor at $65-95/night. Alaya Resort Ubud on Jalan Hanoman (parallel to Monkey Forest Road) is the best mid-range pick: pool villas, good spa, and central location without the direct road noise.
Komaneka at Rasa Sayang is right on Monkey Forest Road but wraps around internal courtyard gardens that effectively buffer the street noise. For guests who want the most central possible location with good mid-luxury amenities, this is the best option.
Four Seasons Sayan: The River Gorge Experience
The Four Seasons Sayan sits above the Ayung River gorge 3 kilometers west of central Ubud. The approach is the first hint at what follows: you cross a bridge to an oval rooftop garden, then descend by spiral stairway into the resort. It is a deliberate cinematic sequence.
Villas have private plunge pools on private terraces cantilevered over the valley. The Ayung Terrace restaurant has the best setting of any hotel restaurant in Ubud. The white water rafting on the Ayung River starts just below the property.
The distance from town means the Four Seasons is a destination rather than a base for exploring. Most guests either stay entirely within the resort or take the hotel car to central Ubud for shopping and restaurants. At these rates, being fully self-contained makes sense.
Campuhan: Ubud's Historic Northern Edge
Campuhan is where Ubud's history as an artist colony begins. The Tjampuhan Hotel was opened in the 1930s by Walter Spies, the German artist who helped define Bali's reputation in the Western imagination. The property has not been heavily renovated and the character is genuine.
The Campuhan Ridge Walk starts just in front of the hotel. Going early in the morning from Tjampuhan, you have the path essentially to yourself for the first 30 minutes before tour groups arrive from town. The natural spring pools in the hotel gardens are the authentic feature worth experiencing.
The area around Campuhan bridge has some of Ubud's better restaurants on the upper road. Bridges Restaurant above the river is worth a dinner. The Neka Art Museum 500 meters up Jalan Raya Sanggingan is one of the best small art museums in Southeast Asia.
COMO Uma Ubud and the Wellness Circuit
COMO Uma Ubud on Jalan Raya Sanggingan operates the most serious wellness program in Ubud. The COMO Shambhala curriculum includes structured yoga retreats, detox programs, and spa treatments that go beyond the typical hotel spa. Guests book specific programs alongside accommodation.
The property is on a hillside west of central Ubud with pool villas that have genuine privacy. The organic produce kitchen uses vegetables from the resort's own garden and from local Ubud farmers, which shows in the food quality.
For wellness-focused travelers who want a structured program rather than picking classes a la carte from multiple studios, COMO Uma is the most organized option in the wider Ubud area. The cost is significantly higher than independent studio scheduling but the coherence of the program justifies it for intensive stays.
Getting Around Ubud
Central Ubud (Ubud Palace to Monkey Forest) is walkable and most guests explore this core on foot. Beyond it, the terrain of Ubud's hills means walking long distances is tiring. Scooter rental costs 60,000-80,000 IDR per day from multiple shops on Jalan Hanoman.
Gojek operates in Ubud though motorbike taxis are the most practical option for short hops. Car services for longer trips cost 300,000-500,000 IDR for a half-day with driver to Tegalalang, Tirta Empul, or down to the coast.
The roads in Ubud are narrow and the rice paddy access tracks are not designed for cars. A scooter unlocks the real Ubud hinterland: early morning rides through the rice paddies north of Jalan Raya Ubud before the tourist vans start is one of the genuinely good Bali experiences.

The walk back uphill to the Ubud Palace area takes 20 minutes. Both hotels run shuttles. The neighborhood is quiet at night and the sound of the river below carries up to the rooms. Morning yoga on a jungle-view terrace here is the quintessential Ubud experience.

Monkey Forest Road and Jalan Hanoman form the main walkable core of Ubud. Puri Garden, Alaya Resort, and Komaneka at Rasa Sayang all operate in this zone. The upside is walking to everything: the market, the palace, Yoga Barn, Locavore, and the Monkey Forest are all within 10-15 minutes.
Noise is higher here than on the valley roads. Properties on Jalan Hanoman have the best balance of central access and manageable noise. Street-facing rooms on the main Monkey Forest Road are genuinely noisy during the day.

Budget Ubud
Pondok Kurnia on Jalan Karna starts at $45 and includes breakfast near the Ubud Palace. Puri Garden Hotel on Monkey Forest Road does $65-95 with a pool. Both undercut the overpriced Monkey Forest Road guesthouses that charge Seminyak prices for a basic fan room.
Bali's Best Dining
Locavore on Jalan Dewi Sita is the most technically accomplished restaurant in Bali at $55-80 per person for the tasting menu. Warung Ibu Oka near the palace does babi guling for $5-8. The range between these two is Ubud's dining landscape: world-class and street-level, often within 200 meters of each other.

The Yoga Barn on Jalan Hanoman runs 8-10 classes daily for $12-18 each. COMO Uma's COMO Shambhala program is the most structured wellness offering in Bali. March to May sees the transition from wet to dry season. March can still have afternoon rain. April and May are increasingly dry and the rice terraces are typically green after the wet season. The Galungan and Kuningan ceremonies often fall in this period, bringing temple decorations to every compound in Ubud.
Summer (Jun-Sep)
June through September is the best season for Ubud. Dry and cool by Bali standards, ideal for the Campuhan Ridge Walk, Tegalalang sunrise visits, and temple exploration. Autumn (Oct-Nov)
October and November bring the return of afternoon rain. The rice terraces start to flood for planting and the landscape is different from the dry season. Hotel prices drop from summer peaks. Winter (Dec-Feb)
December brings the Christmas peak alongside wet season rain. January and February are the wettest months but the rain is typically afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours. Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, falls in March or April and closes the entire island for 24 hours. The rice planting season in wet months is visually interesting in the terraces north of Ubud.

Book the Campuhan Ridge Walk before 6:30am
The ridge path is genuinely empty before 7am and crowded by 9am. The light on the rice paddies and valleys is best in the first hour after sunrise. Tjampuhan Hotel is the starting point. You can walk the 2km path and be back for breakfast before the first tour groups arrive.
Reserve Locavore 2-3 weeks ahead
Locavore on Jalan Dewi Sita books out 2-3 weeks ahead in high season. It is one of the best tasting-menu restaurants in Southeast Asia. Book online through their website as soon as you have dates. The 5-course lunch menu at $45 is the best value entry point.
Four Seasons Sayan: arrive by 3pm
Checking in before 3pm lets you use the afternoon for the resort's guided valley walk and have the Ayung Terrace restaurant for dinner. Checking in at 6pm wastes most of what makes the property special. The property is not a convenient base for day trips so maximize time within the resort.
Tegalalang Rice Terraces: go before 7am
By 9am, every terrace section has hawkers, Instagram swing operators, and tour groups. At 6:30am, the terrace is quiet, the light is excellent, and no one is charging you to step through. Bring a scooter from Ubud (15-minute ride) rather than paying for a tourist taxi.
Get malaria medication and updated vaccines before visiting
Bali is low-risk for malaria but it is present in some rural areas of Ubud's hinterland. Consult a travel health clinic before going. Dengue fever is more common and has no prophylaxis. Use mosquito repellent with DEET after sunset. Ubud's hospitals are competent for basic care but serious medical issues require Denpasar or Singapore.
Gojek works in central Ubud, not everywhere
Gojek operates reliably on the main Ubud roads (Monkey Forest, Hanoman, Bisma) but drivers sometimes refuse the steep valley roads that lead to Bisma properties or the rural tracks north of town. Have your hotel arrange pickups in these areas rather than relying on the app to know the route.
