Christian Sites Around the Lake
The northern shore of the Sea of Galilee has the highest density of New Testament sites in the world. Bus 60 from Tiberias Central Bus Station stops at Tabgha (Church of Multiplication, Primacy of Peter), Capernaum, and continues to Safed. A full day circuit costs $5-8 in bus fares.

The Waterfront and Promenade
The Tiberias waterfront promenade runs from the marina north along the lake for about 1.5 kilometers. The best section is the northern stretch past the Restal Hotel where the promenade is wider and the fish restaurants face directly over the water.

Hamat Tiberias and the Hot Springs
The Hamat Tiberias National Park is 2 kilometers south of the city center, reachable by a 25-minute walk along the lakeside or by taxi for $6. The park contains a remarkably well-preserved 4th-century mosaic synagogue floor with zodiac wheel designs. Entry is $8.
The hot spring spa complex immediately adjacent charges $30-60 for bathing. The springs are 35C-40C and high in minerals. Historically used since the Hellenistic period. Worth the visit if you have an extra afternoon. Avoid weekend mornings when domestic visitors crowd the bathing pools.
Day Trip to the Golan Heights
The Golan Heights rise dramatically east of the Sea of Galilee, visible from the Tiberias waterfront. A taxi to the foot of the escarpment takes 20 minutes. Gamla Nature Reserve 35 kilometers northeast has vulture viewing and ancient city ruins. Nimrod Fortress 50 kilometers north is one of the best preserved Crusader castles in the Middle East.
The Golan wine region around Katzrin has several wineries open for tasting, Golan Heights Winery being the largest. A hire car is the most practical way to explore. Day tours from Tiberias run $60-90 per person.
Swimming and Water Sports
Gai Beach is the main public beach, 2 kilometers south of center, with water park attractions and $5 entry. The beach area at the Lido in the northern part of the city is free and quieter. Jet ski rental at the marina starts at $40 for 30 minutes.
The Sea of Galilee is warm enough for comfortable swimming from May through October. Water temperature peaks at 28C in August. Kayak rental is available at several points along the northern shore for $20 per hour. Sailing trips from the marina go for $30-50 per person.
Practical Tips for Tiberias
Tiberias is small enough to walk between most attractions in the center. The waterfront promenade runs from the old city south to the marina in about 20 minutes. The city bus connects to the Central Bus Station where intercity buses depart.
Jewish holidays and school holidays are the busiest periods. Shabbat (Friday sunset to Saturday night) means some restaurants and shops close, especially in the more religious areas of the city. Most waterfront fish restaurants and hotels stay open through Shabbat. Always call ahead to confirm on Friday evenings.

Summer

Book waterfront rooms specifically
Hotels on the Tiberias promenade have both lake-facing and garden-facing rooms, often at the same advertised price. Always specify 'lake view' or 'sea of Galilee view' when booking. Use Bus 60 for the northern shore sites
Bus 60 from Tiberias Central Bus Station runs north along the lake shore stopping at Tabgha (Church of Multiplication), Capernaum, and continuing to Safed. It runs roughly hourly and costs $2.50 per trip. For a full day circuit of the northern shore sites, the bus is cheaper and easier than hiring a taxi.
Avoid Tiberias during Israeli school holidays
Israeli school holidays in July-August and the major Jewish holidays (Passover, Sukkot) fill the waterfront hotels weeks in advance. During Sukkot in October many families stay in the Kinneret area. If visiting in these periods, book 6-8 weeks ahead minimum and expect higher prices and crowded beaches.
Shabbat service disruption is significant here
Tiberias is more religious than Tel Aviv. On Shabbat (Friday sunset to Saturday night) many restaurants close, all public buses stop running, and the city gets noticeably quiet. The Hamat Tiberias National Park with its 4th-century mosaic synagogue floor is best visited before 11am to avoid school groups. Entry is $8 per adult. The adjacent hot spring spa complex requires no reservation for general bathing. Combine both in a 2-hour morning visit before the midday heat arrives.
Rent a car for Galilee day trips
The Golan Heights, Sea of Galilee northern shore, and the Galilee wine region are all within 50 kilometers but bus schedules can be inconvenient. Car hire from Tiberias runs $50-80 per day. Nimrod Fortress, Gamla Nature Reserve, and the Golan wineries all require a car to explore properly.
