Lucca is compact, walkable, and genuinely one of the most underrated cities in Tuscany. The entire Historic Center sits inside Renaissance-era walls that you can walk or cycle in 45 minutes flat. Get a room inside those walls. anywhere near Piazza dell'Anfiteatro or the Cathedral District. and you won't need a car, a taxi, or a plan.
Your first morning: rent a bike on Via Anfiteatro for about €3/hour and do a full loop on top of the walls. Then walk down Via Fillungo for coffee at one of the old pasticcerie. Skip the tourist-facing cafes around Piazza Napoleone and find Bar San Colombano instead. locals-only, half the price, twice the atmosphere.
Inside the walls vs. outside: which is right for you?
Inside the walls means no car, constant foot traffic, and prices that run $20-40/night higher than comparable rooms outside. But you're 5 minutes from Torre Guinigi, 8 minutes from Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, and the whole city feels like a stage set that you're actually living in. For most trips of 2-4 nights, it's the obvious call.
Outside the walls makes sense in two situations: you have a car and want a countryside property like Tenuta San Pietro in Capannori, or you're on a very tight budget and the extra walking doesn't bother you. Massa Pisana, 3km southwest of the center, has a quieter, more local feel with Locanda L'Elisa as its standout property.
The honest guide to Lucca's neighborhoods
The Cathedral District around Via della Rosa and Piazza San Martino is the most atmospheric part of the city. It's quieter than the Via Fillungo corridor, closer to Palazzo Pfanner and the southern walls, and where you'll find Albergo San Martino holding down the budget end. The Historic Center around Piazza dell'Anfiteatro is livelier but noisier on weekends.
Piazza del Giglio sits right at the heart of things, a 3-minute walk from both Piazza Napoleone and the start of Via Fillungo. Hotel Universo has dominated this square for decades and for good reason: the location is essentially perfect. Via del Fosso runs along the old canal on the eastern side of the center. quieter, less foot traffic, and where Hotel Ilaria sits in relative peace.
Lucca for cyclists: what your hotel actually needs
Lucca is one of Italy's best cycling cities. The 4.2km wall loop is the obvious start, but serious cyclists use it as a base for routes into the Garfagnana valley or toward the Versilia coast, both 30-60 minutes by bike. If cycling matters to you, confirm your hotel has secure bike storage. not just 'a place outside.' Palazzo Alexander and Hotel Ilaria both handle this well.
Bike rental shops cluster near Piazzale Verdi and along Via Anfiteatro. A decent hybrid costs €10-15/day or €3-4/hour. The tourist bikes near Porta San Pietro are fine for wall loops but not hill routes. Ask your hotel to point you toward Cicli Bizzarri on Piazza Santa Maria. it's where locals actually go.
Lucca's festival calendar: when to book and when to avoid
The Lucca Summer Festival in July brings big international acts to Piazza Napoleone. think major stadium-level concerts in a medieval square. Hotels inside the walls sell out fast and rates jump by 60-80%. Book 2 months out minimum if you want to be there for it. The Settembre Lucchese in September is smaller but genuinely lovely, with opera and theater around the city.
Then there's Lucca Comics & Games. It runs late October and is the single biggest pricing event of the year. If you're not going for comics, skip that week entirely. the city is packed and prices are brutal. Carnival in February and Easter week are both peak-adjacent: moderate crowds, prices around $90-160/night for mid-range rooms.
Getting to and around Lucca without losing your mind
Lucca Centrale station is well-connected to Florence (1.5 hours, roughly €8-10 by regional train) and Pisa (25 minutes, €4). From Pisa Galileo Galilei airport, a taxi to Lucca runs about €60-70 and takes 30 minutes. There's also a combined train/bus connection via Pisa Centrale for around €10 total if you're on a tight budget.
Inside the walls, there's no useful public transport. it's all walking and bikes. For day trips, Vaibus runs regional buses to the Garfagnana valley and Bagni di Lucca. Taxis queue outside Porta San Pietro and Piazza Napoleone. a ride to Capannori or Massa Pisana runs €12-18. There is no metro, no tram, and no rideshare app worth opening here.

The trade-off is noise on weekend nights, especially near Via Fillungo and around Piazza Napoleone. Hotels here range from $45/night at Ostello San Frediano to $450/night at Palazzo Dipinto, so there's no excuse for picking badly.
