Using Sorrento as an Amalfi Base
Sorrento is the smartest base for the entire Sorrentine Peninsula and Amalfi Coast. The Circumvesuviana train gives Naples, Herculaneum, and Pompeii access without driving. The ferry from Marina Piccola connects to Capri (25 minutes), Positano (35 minutes), and Amalfi (50 minutes) in summer.
For the SS163 Amalfi Drive, the SITA bus is the best option. Buy a 24-hour travel card at the station for $8 and ride it as many times as you want. The most dramatic section is Positano to Amalfi. Leave Sorrento by 9am to avoid the midday crowds at Positano.
The Centro Storico on Foot
Sorrento's historic center is dense with interest. The covered Via San Cesareo market street has food shops, limoncello producers, and craftwork at better prices than the piazza. Walk down Via Luigi di Maio to the cliff edge for the view. Marina Grande (the old fishing harbor) is 15 minutes downhill from Piazza Tasso via a steep path.
The Museo Correale di Terranova on Via Correale has the best collection of Neapolitan decorative arts in the region, rarely crowded, entry $10. Allow 90 minutes. The ceramic tiles and porcelain collection is outstanding for the period.
Capri Day Trip
The fast ferry from Marina Piccola to Capri takes 20-25 minutes and costs $21 each way. Buy tickets at the ferry office the evening before in July and August. First ferry is around 7:30am, last return around 7-8pm.
In Capri: take the funicular from the port to Capri town ($2.50), walk to the Garden of Augustus for the view over the Faraglioni rocks (free), and take the chairlift to Monte Solaro from Anacapri for $15 return. The Blue Grotto boat trip adds $15-20 but requires calm seas. Budget $60-80 per person for a full day including transport.
Pompeii Without the Crowds
Pompeii is 35 minutes from Sorrento by Circumvesuviana train (get off at Pompei Scavi). The site opens at 9am and is most manageable before 11am. Buy tickets online at pompeiisites.org for $18 to skip the entrance queue.
Take an audio guide ($8 rental) or the official app. Start with the Forum, then the Villa of the Mysteries (a 10-minute walk to the site perimeter). The House of the Faun and the Brothel are in the center. Allow 4-5 hours minimum. Wear good shoes and bring water since there are minimal facilities inside.
Eating and Drinking in Sorrento
Avoid every restaurant on Piazza Tasso that has a person standing outside inviting you in. Walk instead to Ristorante Il Buco on Rampa Marina Piccola or Trattoria da Emilia near Marina Grande for genuine Sorrentine cooking at $40-55 for two with wine.
Limoncello tasting is de rigueur. Limonoro on Via San Cesareo has tastings of their house-produced limoncello and cream liqueur. The farm-produced bottles cost $12-18 at the producer versus $25-35 at tourist shops. Buy lemons from the market and make the association clear.
Getting Around the Sorrentine Peninsula
The SITA bus network covers the peninsula regularly. Route 145 goes west to Massa Lubrense (good beaches 15 minutes, $2). Route A from Sorrento to Amalfi along the coast road runs hourly in summer. Bus stops are marked with SITA signs.
Taxis in Sorrento operate at fixed tourist tariffs that are high by Italian standards. A taxi to the Circumvesuviana station is $15 when it is 10 minutes walk. Walking the center is almost always faster than waiting for a taxi in July-August. For late-night returns from Naples, the taxi from Sorrento station is genuinely necessary.
