The Egyptian Museum
The Museo Egizio on Via Accademia delle Scienze is the second largest Egyptian collection outside Cairo, with over 40,000 objects including the intact tomb of Kha and Merit (18th Dynasty), one of the most complete Egyptian burial sets ever found. Entry is $17 and includes the adjacent Galleria Sabauda (Savoy royal art collection).
Allow 3-4 hours minimum. Book tickets online to skip the entrance queue, essential in summer. The museum is spread across 5 floors with chronological organization from prehistoric to Roman Egypt. The basement floor with papyrus scrolls and the ground floor statue gallery are the highlights. Tuesday evenings until 10pm have reduced $10 entry.
The Royal Palaces and Piazza Castello
Piazza Castello in the city center is ringed by royal residences. The Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace) and the Palazzo Madama are both UNESCO-listed, forming part of the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy designation covering 14 sites around Piedmont. Combined entry is around $15.
Directly inside the Palazzo Reale is the Armeria Reale (Royal Armoury), one of the most important collections of medieval weaponry in Europe. The Royal Gardens behind the palace give views toward the Alps on clear days. The Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista next door holds the Turin Shroud (displayed every 3-5 years, not always on show).
Lingotto and the Fiat Rooftop
The Lingotto complex in the south of Turin was the Fiat car factory from 1923 to 1982, designed with a rooftop test track that is still intact and visible. The NH Turin Lingotto Congress hotel is built into the complex. The Eataly supermarket here is the original and best-stocked location.
The Pinacoteca Agnelli gallery on the complex rooftop has an intimate collection of about 25 paintings by Matisse, Picasso, Canaletto, Tiepolo, and others, selected by Gianni Agnelli personally. It is small but curated with taste. Entry is $7. Lingotto is 15 minutes from the center by Metro Line 1.
Aperitivo and Turin's Food Culture
Turin invented the aperitivo hour and it is still done properly here. From 6-9pm bars in the Quadrilatero Romano (near Via Garibaldi) and around Piazza Carignano set out tables with free food when you order a drink. A Vermouth or Campari costs $6-8 and the included food is enough for dinner if you do 2-3 bars.
The Caffè Al Bicerin at Via della Consolata 5 has been serving the bicerin (layered espresso, chocolate, and cream in a glass) since 1763. €6 per glass but worth it. The chocolate shops on Via Roma and Via Po have the best gianduja (hazelnut chocolate paste, invented in Turin) in the country.
Day Trip to the Langhe
The Langhe wine region 60 kilometers south produces Barolo (the king of Italian reds), Barbaresco, and Moscato. The town of La Morra on its hilltop has the best views over the vineyards. Alba, the main town, has the white truffle fair October-November with truffles sold for $300-500 per 100g.
Several tour operators run Langhe day trips from Turin for $60-80 per person including transport and 2-3 winery visits with tastings. If renting a car, the SP165 road through Serralunga d'Alba passes through some of the most valuable wine land in Italy.
The Quadrilatero Romano
The Quadrilatero Romano is Turin's oldest neighborhood, a grid of Roman streets between Via Garibaldi and Via del Carmine. It has the best concentration of independent restaurants, wine bars, and aperitivo venues in the city. Mercato di Porta Palazzo just north is Europe's largest outdoor market, open daily except Sunday.
Best explored on foot starting from Piazza Emanuele Filiberto. Via Santa Chiara has wine bars at $5-8 per glass. Ristorante Consorzio on Via Monte di Pietà is the best Piedmontese cooking in the neighborhood at $50-65 per person. The neighborhood is genuinely alive from 11am to midnight.
