New Kingston: where to actually stay
New Kingston is the commercial and social hub of the city, centered on Knutsford Boulevard and stretching up toward Half Way Tree. It's where the best hotels are, the best restaurants, and the easiest access to Devon House on Hope Road. which is 10 minutes on foot.
The 4-block stretch between Trafalgar Road and Knutsford Boulevard has everything you need within walking distance. Stay here and skip the taxi hassle entirely. That said, book a hotel with secure parking if you're renting a car. street parking in New Kingston is genuinely chaotic.
Blue Mountains: the escape most visitors miss
Most tourists spend their whole Kingston trip at sea level and go home without ever driving up into the Blue Mountains. That's a mistake. The 45-minute drive up Gordon Town Road above Irish Town changes everything. cooler temperatures, coffee farms, and views that make New Kingston feel very far away.
Strawberry Hill is the obvious base up here, and it's genuinely world-class. But even if you're not staying there, budget a full day for the Blue Mountains. The Blue Mountain Peak trail starts at about 2,256 meters and most hikers begin at 2am to catch the sunrise. Book a local guide through your hotel. solo hiking on unfamiliar mountain trails at night isn't smart.
Getting around Kingston without losing your mind
JUTC buses are cheap and reliable for daytime travel along major corridors like Constant Spring Road and Washington Boulevard. For $1 USD you can get from Half Way Tree to Papine, which puts you close to the UWI campus and the eastern end of Hope Road. Taxis are metered but many drivers will negotiate a flat rate. always agree on the price before you get in.
The Kingston Waterfront and Port Royal are a solid 20-25 minutes from New Kingston by taxi, costing around $12-18 USD. Don't attempt those routes by bus unless you know the city well. If you're heading to Port Antonio to visit Geejam, that's a 2.5-hour drive along the A4 coastal road. rent a car or hire a driver for $80-120 USD return.
Food in Kingston: skip the hotel restaurant
Devon House on Hope Road is a mandatory stop, and not just for the mansion tour. The Devon House I-Scream is legitimately some of the best ice cream in the Caribbean. the rum and raisin flavor specifically. It's 10 minutes walk from most New Kingston hotels and open until 11pm most nights.
For proper Jamaican food, head to Redbones Blues Café on Argyle Road in Liguanea, or grab patties from Tastee on Half Way Tree Road. Most hotel breakfast spreads in Kingston are generic buffets that cost $15-20 USD. Skip them, walk 5 minutes, and eat better for $5.
Downtown Kingston: visit, don't stay
Downtown has the National Gallery of Jamaica on Ocean Boulevard. genuinely excellent and chronically undervisited. The Craft Market near the waterfront is worth an hour, though expect persistent sales pitches. Kingston Parish Church on King Street is one of the oldest buildings in the Western Hemisphere and most visitors walk right past it.
We don't recommend basing yourself Downtown. The hotel options there are poor value compared to New Kingston, and the area quiets down sharply after 6pm. Visit for the culture, come back to New Kingston to sleep.
What Kingston gets right that Montego Bay doesn't
Montego Bay is where most tourists land. Kingston is where Jamaicans actually live. That difference shows up in the food, the music, the conversation. and the hotel value. You get more room for your money in New Kingston than in any comparable neighborhood in Mo Bay, and the culture is thicker.
The Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road is in Kingston, not Montego Bay. Tuff Gong Recording Studios is in Kingston. The National Dance Theatre Company performs in Kingston. If you came to Jamaica for more than a resort pool, this is the city you should be in. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.

This is where the bulk of our picks are concentrated, and for good reason. It's walkable, relatively safe, and has the best mix of restaurants, cafés, and nightlife in the city.
Hotels here range from $55/night at Altamont Court on Altamont Crescent up to $220/night at the Courtyard by Marriott on Caledonia Avenue. That spread means nearly any budget works in this neighborhood. The Spanish Court Hotel on St. Lucia Avenue is the standout for anyone who wants quality without flying to the Blue Mountains.
