Titchfield vs. San San: Which base is right for you?
Titchfield is Port Antonio's original neighbourhood, sitting on a narrow peninsula above the twin harbours. You're 5 minutes walk from Musgrave Market, close to the Fort George ruins, and surrounded by real town life. Hotels here cost $55-99/night on average.
San San is a 15-minute drive east along the A4, and it's where the coast gets genuinely spectacular. The Blue Lagoon, Frenchman's Cove, and San San Beach are all within a few minutes of each other. Budget another $20-40/night compared to Titchfield, but you're paying for direct beach access and quieter surroundings.
Getting around Port Antonio without a car
Route taxis run along the A4 between Titchfield, San San, Drapers, and Boston Bay. Fares are fixed: $150-300 Jamaican dollars for most hops, which is roughly $1-2 USD. Flag one down on the main road, not from the official taxi rank near the market, which charges tourist prices.
For longer trips, like Somerset Falls (25 minutes west) or Reach Falls (45 minutes east near Manchioneal), negotiate a private taxi for the day. Expect $50-70 USD for a 6-hour hire from Titchfield. Rideshares don't operate here, so ask your hotel to recommend a trusted local driver.
Port Antonio's beaches: what no one tells you
Frenchman's Cove charges a $10 USD entrance fee but it's worth it. The freshwater stream running into the sea is real, and the beach doesn't get crowded until 11am. Go early. Winnifred Beach in Fairy Hill is the locals' beach and it's free, but the facilities are basic.
Boston Bay is 20 minutes east of San San and it's the birthplace of jerk chicken. The beach is decent but the real reason to go is the jerk pits on the roadside, open from midday. Don't bother with the vendors near the car park. walk 200 metres further east to the smaller stalls.
Where to eat near your hotel in Port Antonio
For the best breakfast in town, head to Woody's Low Bridge Place on Folly Road. $8-12 USD for a full Jamaican spread. If you're staying in San San, the closest proper restaurant is the Trident bar, but it's pricey. Most mid-range hotels in the area will point you toward local cookshops on the main road.
Dickie's Best Kept Secret on Anchovy Road is the dinner spot that locals rate above everything else. It's about 10 minutes east of Titchfield by car and reservations are essential. Geejam's on-site restaurant is genuinely good if you're already in San San, but budget $60-80 USD per head.
Rainy season in Port Antonio: what to expect
October and November are the wettest months, with daily rainfall common from midday onward. The upside is that hotel prices drop 25-35% across the board. Kanopi House goes from $480 to around $310/night, and Frenchman's Cove drops from $420 to $280/night.
Rain here tends to be heavy and short, not all-day drizzle. Mornings are usually clear and perfect for beach time. The Rio Grande Valley and the Nonsuch Caves area look otherworldly after rain. if you're an eco-traveller, the wet season is actually the better time.
Things to skip (we've seen these mistakes too many times)
Don't book anything that advertises itself as 'close to the Bonnie View' unless you want to be on a hillside with no beach access and a 20-minute taxi ride to everything. The view is fine. The location isn't practical for most visitors. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times.
The strip of guesthouses along West Street near the bus station is cheap for a reason. Noise, security issues, and unreliable water pressure are common. Spend another $20-30/night and get a room in Upper Titchfield or Drapers instead. it's a completely different experience.

Fort George Street runs along the spine of the peninsula and the whole area feels lived-in and real. This is where you go if you want Jamaican daily life rather than a resort bubble.
Hotels here are the most affordable in our list. Ivanhoe's Guesthouse in Upper Titchfield sits at $55-85/night and Shadows on the Hill is just down the road at $75-99/night. You're 5 minutes walk from Musgrave Market and 10 minutes from the town wharf.
The downside is distance from the coast. Frenchman's Cove and the Blue Lagoon are 15-20 minutes east by route taxi. But if you're on a tight budget or you want authentic character over beach proximity, Titchfield is the right call.
