How to pick the right Hiroshima neighborhood
Hatchobori is Hiroshima's commercial and cultural core. It's where the tram lines converge, where Hondori arcade starts, and where you'll find everything from convenience stores to rooftop bars. Otemachi sits just west, quieter, closer to Peace Memorial Park, and where Chisun Inn is a reliable mid-range pick.
Motomachi is the neighborhood directly north of the park, near Hiroshima Castle. good for travelers who want slightly less foot traffic but still easy tram access. Avoid pricing yourself into a station-area hotel just because it seems central on a map: Hiroshima Station is east of the action, and that gap adds up fast.
Getting around Hiroshima without a headache
The Hiroden tram does the heavy lifting for ¥180 a ride. Lines 1, 2, and 6 all pass through Hatchobori, which is your main interchange. The 1-Day Pass at ¥700 makes sense if you're combining the city center with a Miyajima day trip. it covers the Hiroden ferry connection.
Taxis are easy to flag on Aioi-dori or outside Hiroshima Station but expect ¥700-900 for a short hop across Naka-ku. The shinkansen stops at Hiroshima Station, not in the city center. factor in a 20-minute tram or 15-minute taxi when planning checkout times for bullet train departures.

Hiroshima beyond the Peace Park: what else to do
Shukkeien Garden in Kaminobori-cho is a 10-minute tram ride from Hatchobori and almost entirely missed by day-trippers rushing to Miyajima. The garden is 400 years old and takes about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. go on a weekday morning. Combine it with the Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum next door.
Onomichi is 80 minutes from Hiroshima by JR Sanyo Line and worth a half-day for the hillside temple walk and the cats. It's also home to Vessel Hotel Campana, one of the best-positioned hotels in western Japan for Seto Inland Sea views. You can day-trip from Hiroshima or make it an overnight and work backwards.
What locals know about staying in Hiroshima
The western exits of Hatchobori tram stop drop you onto Chuo-dori, which is quieter and more useful than the tourist-facing Hondori arcade. Locals eat okonomiyaki at lunch. lines at Okonomi-mura are shorter before noon and again after 2pm. Most convenience stores on Chuo-dori stock Hiroshima Lemon Cider, which is genuinely good and costs ¥130.
August 6th is the Peace Memorial Ceremony at Peace Memorial Park. hotels within 1km book out months ahead and prices jump 30-50%. If you want to attend, commit early. If you're not going for the ceremony, consider arriving August 7th when the city settles and prices drop back to normal within 24 hours.
