Naha: beyond Kokusai-dori
Kokusai-dori is fine for an hour. Then walk south into Tsuboya, Naha's pottery district, where the lanes get quiet and the craft shops are the real thing. Makishi Public Market is 10 minutes on foot from most Naha hotels and is where locals actually buy their food. fish counters, pork cuts, bitter melon by the kilo.
Stay near Naha Port or Izumizaki rather than right on Kokusai-dori if you want a functional neighborhood feel. The Yui Rail's Miebashi or Asahibashi stations are quieter, cheaper, and still only 3-4 stops from Shuri Castle.
Driving Okinawa: the coastal route north
Pick up your rental car at Naha Airport and head north on National Route 58. You'll pass through Chatan's American Village around the 40-minute mark, worth a stop for coffee and the beach boardwalk. Keep going through Onna, pull over at Cape Manzamo for the iconic eroded rock formation, and push on to Nago before turning back.
The stretch between Onna and Nago on Route 58 is where the drive gets genuinely beautiful. Stop at the Busena Resort's public cape lookout even if you're not staying there. the underwater observatory costs ¥1,000 and is genuinely worth it. Start early to avoid the Route 58 afternoon gridlock heading back toward Naha.
Okinawan food: what to actually order
Okinawa soba is not Tokyo ramen. it's pork-heavy, broth-rich, and topped with rafute (braised pork belly) or soki (spare rib). Find the best bowls at small family shops off the main drag in Makishi and Tsuboya, not at the tourist-facing spots on Kokusai-dori. Champuru (stir-fry) with goya bitter melon and tofu is the dish Okinawans actually eat daily.
Try awamori, the local rice liquor, at any izakaya in Chatan or Koza's Music Town area. It's stronger than sake and meant to be sipped slowly with ice. Avoid the overpriced 'Okinawan cuisine' set menus at resort hotels. walk 10 minutes and you'll eat better for a third of the price.
Okinawa's US military culture: understanding Koza
Okinawa City, known locally as Koza, grew up around Kadena Air Base and carries that legacy in its music, food, and street layout. Gate 2 Street and the surrounding blocks have a raw, lived-in energy that's unlike anything else in Japan. The Koza Music Town complex near Goya Crossing hosts live music events regularly and is the best place to catch Okinawan rock and traditional sanshin on the same night.
This is not a polished tourist zone and that's exactly the point. Koza Guest House puts you right in the middle of it at a fraction of Naha's hotel prices. Go on a weekend night and wander. the izakayas and live music bars around Chuo Park Avenue keep going well past midnight.
Luxury in Okinawa: what you're actually paying for
The Busena Terrace on Busena Cape and Halekulani Okinawa in Nakagusuku Bay aren't just expensive hotels. they're running a completely different playbook. Private beach sections, butler service, multiple restaurants with actual culinary credentials, and architecture that uses the ocean view as a design element rather than an afterthought. At $280-800/night, you need to want that level of intentionality.
Hyakuna Garan in Nanjo is the one luxury property that doesn't feel like it's trying to be a Maldives resort. It's rooted in Okinawan ryokan tradition. stone walls, local ceramics, outdoor baths overlooking the Pacific. If the beach resort format isn't your thing, this is the luxury option we'd point you toward first.
Packing and planning: Okinawa practicalities
Sunscreen, reef-safe if you're diving or snorkeling. coral bleaching around Okinawa is a real problem and local operators increasingly enforce it. Bring cash for smaller restaurants and market stalls in Makishi and Tsuboya, as card acceptance outside tourist areas is patchy. The humidity from June onward is intense; pack accordingly and don't underestimate how quickly a beach day turns exhausting.
Buy an ICOCA card at Naha Airport for the monorail and convenience store purchases in Naha. Outside the city, cash is king. Book car rentals at least 2-3 weeks ahead in peak summer and Golden Week. Naha Airport rental lots genuinely run dry and the alternative is paying surge prices for whatever's left.

Naha is where the island's history and modern life collide on the same block. Shuri Castle dominates the east end of the city, rebuilt after the 1945 destruction and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kokusai-dori runs through the center like a main artery. useful, lively, but skip the overpriced souvenir shops and head into Makishi's side streets instead.
The Naha Port area near Tomari gives you a more honest neighborhood feel than the tourist corridor. Guest House Naha Port sits here, 12 minutes walk from Naminoue Beach and a short cab ride from Makishi Public Market. ANA Crowne Plaza Harborview is in Izumizaki, a calmer pocket south of Kokusai-dori that's popular with business travelers connecting through Naha Airport.
Naha's Yui Rail is the only train line on the island, running from the airport up through Makishi, Miebashi, and on to Shuri. It's limited but handy for airport transfers and Shuri Castle visits. Everywhere else requires a bus, taxi, or rental car.

Chatan's American Village in Mihama is a shopping and dining strip built on reclaimed land along the waterfront. touristy but fun, with a Ferris wheel visible from the beach and restaurants that stay open late.
