Ramen in Sapporo. A Street-by-Street Guide
Ramen Yokocho (Ramen Alley) on Minami-hachi-jo in Susukino is the starting point: 13 shops in a narrow alley, each specializing in Sapporo miso ramen. Expect ¥900-1,200 per bowl. Queues form at peak dinner times (7-9pm). For the best single bowl in the city, Junren on Nishi-ichijo has been doing it since 1964.
Soup curry is Sapporo's other obsession. Rojiura Curry Samurai on Minami-2-jo is the go-to, with spice level from 0 to 40+. Order a 20 for a good warming kick. Price: ¥1,300-1,800. It's nothing like Indian curry. light broth, whole vegetables, tender chicken. Sit at the counter and watch the kitchen if you can.
The Snow Festival. A Practical Guide
Held every February in the first 2 weeks. Odori Park (Odori Subway Station) has the main snow sculptures. some as large as 4-story buildings, built by the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force. Susukino site has the international ice sculpture competition. Tsudome (East Sapporo) has the family site with snow slides and hot food stalls.
Best time to visit: after dark for the Susukino ice sculptures under illumination. Odori is good day and night. Tsudome closes at 5pm. Dress for -10°C to -15°C: thermal layers, waterproof outer shell, hand warmers (available at every convenience store for ¥120). Hot sake stands throughout the festival. Reserve hotels the moment you decide to go. no last-minute options.
Susukino at Night
Susukino is safe and fun. Start at Ramen Yokocho for dinner. Move to an izakaya on Minami-roku-jo. Kirin Beer Restaurant in Susukino is a Sapporo institution. Sapporo Classic beer (only available in Hokkaido) on draft with grilled seafood from the morning fish market. Bars here stay open until 4am.
The outer edges of Susukino (past Minami-juhachi-jo) get sketchier. hostess bars and clubs. Fine to walk through but don't let touts pressure you into venues. The inner zone around the Susukino subway station and Ramen Yokocho is completely family-friendly.
Day Trip to Otaru
Otaru is 40 minutes from Sapporo by Rapid Airport train (change at Sapporo Station, ¥750). The canal area is beautiful, especially at dusk. Three things to do: walk the Otaru Canal, visit the Nikka Whisky Distillery for a tour and tasting (free entry, reserve online), and eat fresh sushi at Iroha Sushi near the canal. The covered shopping street has Otaru Glass works.
Best as a half-day trip combined with a Sapporo evening. Leave Sapporo at 9am, walk the canal before the tourist buses arrive by 10:30, lunch at the market, back in Sapporo by 3pm. Alternatively, stay an evening in Otaru for the canal lit with gas lanterns.

The university farm, botanical gardens (entry ¥420), and historic Clark Memorial Hall are all walkable from the north gate.
5 minutes from Kita-juhachi-jo subway station. Free to enter the main campus. Good for a morning walk before the ramen and beer museum in the afternoon. The student cafeteria (daigaku shokudo) serves full meals from ¥400. one of the cheaper and more interesting lunches in Sapporo.

Fall (Sep-Nov)
Hokkaido autumn colors peak in October, earlier than Honshu. Jozankei Onsen valley turns red and gold in early October. one of Japan's best foliage spots. Sapporo city is quiet with good hotel prices. The food markets are excellent in fall with Hokkaido's harvest produce.
