Chinatown. Beyond the Tourist Gate
Yokohama's Chinatown has 4 ornamental gates and 600+ restaurants in 10 blocks. The tourist trap zone is within 50m of the main Zenpukumon gate. here you'll find shouting touts and overpriced set menus. Walk 2 blocks in to Yamashita-cho for the actual restaurants locals use.
Manki Chinese Restaurant on Yamashita-cho is a Chinatown institution since 1961. order the pan-fried gyoza (¥530/6 pieces) and Cantonese roast duck (¥800/portion). For dim sum, Heichinrou on Yamashita-cho 149 is formal but authentic. Budget ¥2,000-3,000/person for a proper Chinatown lunch.
Minato Mirai 21. The Modern Waterfront
MM21 is Yokohama's planned harbor district, built on reclaimed land from 1983. The skyline walk between Queen's Square, Landmark Tower, and the Red Brick Warehouse takes 20 minutes. Cup Noodles Museum (¥500) covers the surprisingly compelling story of instant ramen inventor Momofuku Ando. The Yokohama Museum of Art is in MM21 (¥500-1,500 depending on exhibition).
Landmark Tower's Sky Garden observation deck (floor 69, 273m) is open until 10:30pm (¥1,000 adults). Evening views over the harbor and city are excellent. The Cosmo World Ferris wheel (¥800) is the neighborhood's most photographed element. Red Brick Warehouse (Akarenga) has shops and restaurants in restored 1913 customs warehouses.
Yamate. Yokohama's Western Quarter
Yamate (Bluff) is the hilltop area where Western merchants settled in the 1860s when Yokohama opened to trade. Western-style 19th-century houses, gardens, and churches dot the bluff. The Yamate Jubankan French restaurant in a 1920s building is the neighborhood's dining landmark. Foreigners Cemetery (Gaijin Bochi) has 4,500 graves from 40+ countries.
Access: 20-minute walk uphill from Motomachi Station or Ishikawacho Station. The Hara Museum of Contemporary Art is in a 1938 mansion on the bluff. Walk downhill through Motomachi Shopping Street for boutique shopping and the connection back to Chinatown.
Sankeien Garden
Sankeien is a 175,000m² traditional Japanese garden in south Yokohama, built by silk merchant Sankei Hara in 1906. He relocated 12 historic buildings from Kamakura, Nikko, and Kyoto into the garden. including a 1457 three-story pagoda. Entry ¥700, open 9am-5pm.
Best visited on a weekday in cherry blossom season (late March-early April) or autumn foliage (November). It's 30 minutes by bus from Yokohama Station (Bus 8 from bus stand 2, ¥220). Less well-known than the central sights so it's rarely overcrowded. Photographers love the pagoda-and-pond composition.
Yokohama Ramen vs Chinatown vs Waterfront Dining
Three distinct dining zones in Yokohama. Chinatown: dim sum and Cantonese roast meat at moderate prices (¥1,500-3,000 for a proper meal). Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum requires a separate trip
The Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum is 15 minutes from central Yokohama by the Yokohama Municipal Subway Blue Line. Entry ¥310, ramen ¥900-1,200, open 11am-10pm. Kamakura day trip from Yokohama is very easy
Yokosuka Line from Yokohama Station to Kamakura: 24 minutes, ¥350. First train at 5:30am, last train back at 11:30pm.
