Sweimeh vs Amman: Where to actually stay
If floating in the Dead Sea is your reason for coming, stay in Sweimeh. Full stop. The resort strip along Dead Sea Shore Road has everything within walking distance, and you won't spend an hour in a taxi every morning. Amman is a great city, but it's not the Dead Sea.
The two Amman hotels in our list serve specific purposes. Ashtar Hotel in Downtown near the Roman Citadel works for city explorers on a budget. Grand Hyatt Amman on Zahran Street in Shmeisani is purely for business travelers who need Queen Alia International Airport access and a solid meeting room. Pick Sweimeh unless your itinerary demands otherwise.
The Dead Sea resort strip explained
The Sweimeh resort cluster stretches roughly 8 km along Dead Sea Shore Road, Dead Sea Highway, and Dead Sea Road North. Most of the big names. Kempinski, Hilton, Mövenpick, Marriott, Crowne Plaza. sit within 3 km of each other. You can walk between some, but the road has no real pedestrian infrastructure, so most guests use hotel shuttles.
Don't book the absolute cheapest room at a luxury resort hoping to access the facilities. A standard room at Kempinski gives you full beach access, but a heavily discounted rate might come with pool restrictions. Read the fine print. And if you're not staying at the Mövenpick, their beach-access day passes are worth knowing about for $35-55 per person.
Getting to the Dead Sea without a car
There's no train. The JETT bus from Amman's 7th Circle runs once daily to the Dead Sea area for about JD 3-4, but it deposits you near the public beach at Amman Beach, not the resort strip. A private taxi from Downtown Amman to Sweimeh runs JD 25-35 and takes 60-75 minutes. Uber and Careem operate in Jordan and are often cheaper. check both before hailing a cab.
If you're visiting Petra or Aqaba as part of a loop, rent a car in Amman. The Dead Sea Highway (Route 65) is well-maintained and straightforward. Driving yourself from Amman to Sweimeh is genuinely easy. just give yourself extra time during Eid holidays when the road is packed solid.
Dead Sea health & safety: what hotels won't tell you
The salt concentration is around 34%, which is roughly 10 times saltier than regular ocean water. Any cut, shaving nick, or skin crack will burn intensely. Hotels hand out mineral mud at the spa. but applying it yourself on the beach and rinsing off is free and works just as well. Don't shave for 24 hours before going in.
You cannot drown in the traditional sense, but you can flip onto your face. Stay on your back, keep your eyes and mouth out of the water. If you get salt in your eyes, hotel beach stations have fresh water rinse points. Every major resort from Mövenpick to Ramada has one. use them immediately, don't rub.
When Dead Sea hotel prices spike (and when they drop)
Ramadan changes the rhythm here. During Ramadan (dates shift each year), resorts operate differently: spa hours adjust, restaurant service changes after iftar, and the social atmosphere around the pools in the evening becomes lively and communal. Some travelers love it. Non-Muslim guests are welcome everywhere, but plan around revised schedules.
The most expensive weeks on the Dead Sea resort strip are: Eid al-Fitr (3 days after Ramadan), Eid al-Adha (3 days), Jordan National Day in May, and the stretch between Christmas and New Year. During those windows, Kempinski and Hilton can hit $400+/night. Book 2-3 months ahead or accept mid-week dates for reasonable rates.
Day trips worth planning before you arrive
Bethany Beyond the Jordan, about 10 km north of the main Sweimeh resort cluster on Dead Sea Road North, is where John the Baptist is believed to have baptized Jesus. Entrance is JD 12 and guided tours run regularly. It pairs well with a morning and can be done before the midday heat sets in. Mount Nebo is 30 km away and the views toward the Dead Sea and Jerusalem on a clear day are genuinely remarkable.
Wadi Mujib is the headline adventure. The canyon opens right onto Dead Sea Road, about 40 km south of the resort strip, and the Siq Trail hike involves wading through waist-deep water in a slot canyon. Entry is JD 21 and includes a life jacket. Book the timeslot online before you leave your hotel. morning slots sell out by 9am during peak season.
