North Coast vs South Coast: Which side is right for you?
The north coast (Nyali, Bamburi, Shanzu, Mtwapa) is convenient. You're connected to Mombasa Island by Nyali Bridge, matatus run constantly, and you can actually day-trip to Fort Jesus or the Old Town spice stalls on Ndia Kuu Road without it being a project.
The south coast (Diani, Tiwi, Galu Beach) is more beautiful but more isolated. The Likoni Ferry is the only non-bridge crossing, and queues can eat 45 minutes out of your day. If you're going to Diani, commit to it. Don't plan daily trips back into Mombasa.
Don't get fooled by beachfront claims
We've seen this mistake hundreds of times. A hotel lists 'beachfront' but the actual beach is a coral-rocky strip that disappears at high tide, or access runs through a neighboring resort's grounds. Ask specifically: is there sand, is it swimmable, and what's the tidal situation?
The beaches on the north coast between Bamburi Beach Road and the ocean are generally good year-round. Diani Beach is consistently the best sand quality on the Kenyan coast, with soft white sand stretching several kilometers south from Ukunda town. If beach quality is your top priority, Diani wins.
Getting from Mombasa Moi International Airport to your hotel
The airport sits about 13 km west of Mombasa city center, off the A109 Nairobi highway. A metered taxi to Mombasa Island takes 20-30 minutes and should cost $10-15. To Nyali or Bamburi, budget $15-25. To Diani Beach, it's a 45-60 minute drive plus the Likoni Ferry: expect $35-50.
Uber and Bolt both work in Mombasa and usually run 20-30% cheaper than taxi touts outside arrivals. Don't take the first price someone shouts at you in the arrivals hall. Walk to the taxi rank, or just open the app.
Old Town Mombasa: staying here vs. visiting for a day
The Old Town around Fort Jesus and Mbaraki Road is genuinely atmospheric. The carved Swahili doors, the call to prayer echoing off coral-stone walls, the smell of pilau from street stalls near Biashara Street. It's one of East Africa's best urban walks.
But staying here is a different calculation. Hotel Splendid Mombasa in the Old Town is well-run at $60-90/night, but nightlife noise and narrow streets make it less comfortable for families or light sleepers. Better plan: stay on the north coast beach, and take a half-day trip into Old Town. You get the atmosphere without the downsides.
How to do Diani Beach properly
Diani is 35 km south of Mombasa but feels like a different world. The strip along Diani Beach Road has everything: dive shops, beach bars, kite-surfing at Forty Thieves Beach Bar, and supermarkets at Nakumatt Diani for self-catering. You genuinely don't need to leave for a week.
The best resorts sit on the southern stretch toward Galu Beach, where Leopard Beach Resort and Alfajiri Villas are. This end is quieter, the sand is better, and you're 5 minutes by tuk-tuk from the main Diani Beach Road action. Avoid the very northern end of Diani near the ferry junction: it's noisy and the beach is rockier.
The real cost of a Mombasa beach holiday
Hotel rates alone don't tell the whole story. On top of your room at $45-600/night, budget around $15-25/day on food if you're eating at local joints and mid-range restaurants along Bamburi Beach Road.
