Milimani is the easiest base. You're 10 minutes walk from the Nairobi National Museum on Museum Hill Road, close enough to the CBD to be convenient, but far enough to actually sleep at night. Hotels here cover $45-$99/night, so it suits almost any budget.
If it's your first trip and you're nervous about the city, go with Heron Portico in Milimani or bump up to Nairobi Serena in the CBD. both have solid security and staff who'll point you in the right direction. Don't waste money on a CBD budget hotel just to save $30. It's not worth it.
Safari base camp: the best hotels near Nairobi National Park
Ole-Sereni on Langata Road is the obvious answer. It sits right on the park boundary and you can legitimately see zebra and giraffe from the pool. Morning game drives start at 6am and you're inside the park gate in under 5 minutes. Rates run $150-$220/night.
Hemingways in Karen is the other safari basecamp option, and it's better for multi-day trips with early starts to Amboseli or the Maasai Mara. The team can arrange everything from the hotel on Karen Road and the drive to Wilson Airport takes about 20 minutes. You're paying more, but the logistics become effortless.
Nairobi for business travelers: where to actually stay
Upper Hill is the business district. The Boma Nairobi is the standout here, priced at $140-$210/night, with fast Wi-Fi, proper meeting rooms, and a location that puts you close to the Kenya Revenue Authority, most regional HQs, and the junction of Ngong Road and Upper Hill Road.
Tribe Hotel in Gigiri is the smarter pick if your meetings are near the UN complex on United Nations Avenue or the US Embassy on United Nations Crescent. It's a 5-minute drive from both, rates are $160-$240/night, and the service is the best we've seen at this price point in the city. Breakfast at Tribe is genuinely excellent. Budget that extra hour.
How to get around Nairobi without losing your mind
Bolt and Uber are the only realistic options for tourists. Matatus (shared minibuses) are cheap at KES 30-80 per ride but the routes are confusing, the driving is terrifying, and the pickpocketing risk is real for new visitors. Taxis from hotel reception cost more but they're vetted.
Budget 40-60 minutes for any cross-city journey during morning rush (7am-9am) or evening rush (5pm-8pm) on Uhuru Highway or Ngong Road. If you're going from Westlands to Karen, leave before 7am or after 9pm. Nairobi traffic is not a minor inconvenience. it genuinely shapes your itinerary.
Where to eat near your hotel in Nairobi
Westlands has the best restaurant density. From Movenpick you can walk to Furusato on Woodvale Grove for Japanese, or grab nyama choma (roasted meat) at Carnivore on Langata Road, which is 15 minutes by Bolt and a Nairobi institution since 1980. Don't skip it.
Karen is quieter but the restaurants are proper. Talisman on Ngong Road is one of the best dinner spots in the city, with a garden setting and a menu that actually changes. And if you're staying at Hemingways, don't bother eating anywhere else on your first night. the kitchen there earns its price.
Nairobi hotel seasons: when to book and when to avoid
Peak season runs July-October. Safari traffic drives hotel prices up 20-35% across the board, especially at Ole-Sereni and Hemingways. Book these at least 3 months ahead. The long rains (March-May) make the city cheaper but messier. roads flood, schedules shift, and Nairobi National Park gets muddy.
January and February are genuinely underrated. Temperatures sit at 22-26°C, the skies are clear, and mid-range hotels in Upper Hill and Milimani drop to their lowest rates of the year. If you have flexibility, this is the window. The city is busy with domestic business travel but tourist crowds are thin.
