The Mekong Riverside Strip
Fa Ngum Road is the emotional heart of Vientiane. In the mornings, locals do aerobics in Chao Anouvong Park. By sunset, the riverfront fills with people watching the sky turn orange over Thailand on the opposite bank. Hotels here like Ansara and Beau Rivage are in the thick of it.
The night market runs from 5pm to 9pm most evenings, selling Lao textiles and snacks. Dinner at one of the open-air restaurants facing the water with a Beer Lao costs about $8-12 total. This is the best way to spend your first evening in the city.
Colonial Center: Nam Phu to Setthathirath
The fountain square at Nam Phu is the social center of expatriate Vientiane. French colonial buildings ring the square, converted into cafes, restaurants, and small hotels. It is quieter than the riverfront and 10 minutes walk from it.
Setthathirath Road running east-west past the fountain has the best concentration of restaurants per block in the city. Try Makphet for Lao cuisine supporting street youth or Joma Bakery for breakfast. Hotels like Lao Orchid sit right in this zone.
Pha That Luang: The National Symbol
The golden stupa of Pha That Luang is 3 kilometers northeast of the center. It is most impressive in the late afternoon when the gold blazes in low light. Entry costs 10,000 kip and the grounds are quiet on weekday mornings.
The That Luang festival in November transforms the area into a massive fair with processions, boat racing on the Mekong, and temporary markets. If you are visiting then, book hotels 2 months ahead. The whole city fills up.
Khouvieng Road: Residential Vientiane
This broad road running east through the residential districts is where you find Green Park Boutique Hotel and a more local side of the city. Less touristic, more genuine. The fresh market at the eastern end sells produce and street food from 6am.
Motorbike rental shops cluster on Khouvieng, costing 60,000-80,000 kip per day. This is the smartest way to reach Buddha Park 25km east or cross into Thailand via the Friendship Bridge, which is 20 minutes south by road.
Day Trip: Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan)
25 kilometers southeast of the city center, Xieng Khuan is a surreal sculpture park with 200 religious figures created by a spiritual guru in the 1950s. The centerpiece is a giant reclining Buddha 40 meters long. Entry is 5,000 kip.
Rent a motorbike from Khouvieng Road and the ride takes 30 minutes through flat riverside countryside. The park is empty on weekday mornings before 10am. Bring water and sunscreen. The pumpkin-shaped structure is climbable for panoramic views.
Vientiane Practical Tips
Tuk-tuks are the standard way to get around. Negotiate before you get in. Fares within the center should run 20,000-40,000 kip. After 9pm expect drivers to charge double. Grab is available in Vientiane and is more reliable for pricing.
The Lao currency (kip) trades at roughly 20,000 kip per dollar. ATMs on Lan Xang Avenue accept foreign cards but charge 20,000-30,000 kip per withdrawal. Withdraw cash before exploring as kip is not accepted in Thailand and exchanging it back is a loss.

Manthatourath Road and adjacent Saylom Road sit in a calmer part of central Vientiane, further from the tourist strip but still walkable to everything. Salana Boutique Hotel is on Manthatourath and is one of the better romantic options in the city.
Expect more residential streets, shaded trees, and a pace that is noticeably slower than the riverfront. About 15 minutes walk to Fa Ngum Road.

15 minutes walk to the riverfront. The street market at the eastern end sells the cheapest fresh produce in the city. A practical base if you prioritize space and quiet over prime location.

Vientiane has more than 400 wats. Start at Wat Si Saket on Setthathirath Road, the oldest temple still intact in the city with thousands of miniature Buddha images in niches. Then Pha That Luang 3km north. Colonial center hotels put you in walking distance of both.
