Sigulda Old Castle and Town Center
The Sigulda New Castle and adjacent medieval ruins sit right at the top of the valley on Pils iela. The ruins date from the 13th-century Livonian Order and the views down into the Gauja valley are the best free panorama in Latvia. The castle grounds are open year-round.
Hotel Sigulda and Hotel Engel are within 5 minutes walk. The main pedestrian street below the castle has a few cafes and the train station is a 10-minute walk. Start any Sigulda visit here before heading down into the valley.
The Gauja Valley Trail
The 6km trail between Sigulda and Turaida along the Gauja River is the best walk in the area. It passes Gutmanis Cave, the largest cave in the Baltics at 19 meters wide, with carved inscriptions going back to 1668. The path hugs the sandstone cliffs and is genuinely dramatic in autumn.
Start at the cable car base station below Sigulda Castle and walk west along the river toward Turaida. Allow 2 hours each way or combine with the cable car crossing as part of a loop. Muddy after rain, so waterproof boots are recommended from October to May.
Turaida Museum Reserve
The Turaida estate 4km west of Sigulda centers on a restored 13th-century castle tower visible for miles. Entry costs 5-8 EUR depending on season and includes the rose garden, outdoor museum of Livonian heritage, and views from the tower top.
The legendary Rose of Turaida burial site in the castle grounds draws visitors from across Latvia. June and July when the roses bloom are the best months for Turaida. Turaida Hotel sits at the entrance to the reserve and is the obvious base for exploring this area.
Winter Sports and Bobsled
Sigulda is Latvia's only bobsled track and runs from December to March. The public bobsled ride with a professional pilot costs 20-30 EUR and reaches speeds of 80-100 km/h on the 1,420 meter run. No experience needed and it is genuinely exhilarating.
The small ski hill near the bobsled track offers 3 runs suitable for beginners and intermediates. A day pass costs about 15 EUR. Equipment rental is on site. Not comparable to Alpine skiing but a solid day in winter if you base yourself at Turaida Hotel or Hotel Sigulda.
Krimulda and the Cable Car Crossing
The cable car across the Gauja valley is one of the signature experiences of Sigulda. A single crossing costs 4 EUR and takes you 100 meters above the river on a 5-minute ride with views in both directions up and down the valley.
On the Krimulda side, a 10-minute walk through forest leads to Krimulda Manor, a restored 19th-century estate with one of the finest terraces in Latvia. The sunset view back toward Sigulda Castle from the manor terrace is something photographers specifically come for. Stay the night if you can.
Practical Tips for Sigulda
Trains from Riga Central run every 30-60 minutes. Buy tickets at the machine at Riga station or on board for a small surcharge. The journey costs 2.50 EUR each way. A return ticket is not necessary; just buy single each time.
Weekends in October fill hotels fast. Book any autumn visit at least 6 weeks ahead. For winter visits, January and February are quieter and cheaper. Summer weekends bring school groups and families; if you want the valley trails to yourself, visit on a Tuesday or Wednesday.
