The Sea Castle and Old Harbor
The Sidon Sea Castle on its rocky island is the visual anchor of the city. Walk the causeway at sunset and you get the full effect: the old harbor curving away on both sides, fishing boats bobbing, and the city rising behind you. Entry is $2-3 and takes 30-45 minutes.
The area immediately around the castle has a few cafes and the beginning of the old souk. Hotels in the Sea Castle District like Castel Hotel let you return to this view multiple times a day without planning.
Old Souk and Soap Museum
Sidon's covered souk is one of the most intact in Lebanon. Khan El Franj, an Ottoman-era caravanserai from the 17th century, acts as the anchor for the commercial streets that branch off it. The soap museum at the entrance documents Sidon's 3,000-year tradition of olive oil soap, still made by some family workshops in the old city.
Walk through the gold souk, spice alleys, and produce market for a genuine slice of daily Sidonian life. Visit on a Thursday or Friday morning when the market is busiest. Dress modestly, this is a conservative neighborhood.
The Sidon Corniche
The seafront promenade running south from the Sea Castle is the social gathering point of modern Sidon. Families walk here in the evenings, fishermen work the shoreline, and the seafood restaurants do their best business at sunset.
Al Fanar Hotel is positioned on this stretch and its access to the Corniche atmosphere is one of the main reasons to choose it. The best seafood restaurants are in the blocks between the Corniche and the parallel street one block inland, away from tourist pricing.
St. Louis Crusader Castle and Inland History
Beyond the Sea Castle, Sidon has another Crusader fortification: the St. Louis Castle, a land-based fortress from the 13th century near the edge of the old souk. Less visited than the Sea Castle but equally interesting, with underground chambers and a quieter atmosphere.
The area around it has some of the most authentic small restaurants in the city, serving cheap shawarma and falafel to local workers from the souks.
Day Trip to Tyre (Sur)
Tyre is 40km south of Sidon and has some of the finest Roman ruins in the Middle East. A shared taxi from Sidon costs $2 and takes 45 minutes. The Al-Bass Archaeological Site has a Roman hippodrome and triumphal arch. The Al-Mina site has Phoenician and Roman colonnaded streets running to the harbor.
UNESCO-listed, not overcrowded, and genuinely impressive. Most visitors do Tyre as a half-day from Sidon and return in time for a Corniche dinner. Worth combining with a Sidon overnight.
Practical Notes for Sidon
Lebanon's economic situation means cash USD or LBP are both used depending on the establishment. Hotels typically quote in USD. Street food and small restaurants use the official or unofficial LBP rates which fluctuate. Ask before ordering if USD pricing is not displayed.
Sidon is conservative; women should cover their shoulders and avoid shorts in the souk and old city areas. The Sea Castle and Corniche are more relaxed. The city gets hot in July and August, so morning visits to outdoor sites are strongly recommended.

The Sidon Corniche promenade runs south from the old harbor with seafood restaurants, a public beach area, and the main social gathering space of the city. Al Fanar Hotel on the Corniche puts you at the center of evening Sidon.
Livelier than the old city in the evenings. Most of the mid-range dining options are clustered here. A 10-minute walk north to the Sea Castle.

The Haret Saida residential district and downtown commercial area are where most of Sidon's mid-range and business hotels operate. Sidon Village Hotel and Palmyra Hotel are here, with easy access to both the old city and the Corniche.
Less touristic, more authentic. The best cheap restaurants are in these streets. 10-15 minutes walk to the Sea Castle.

The Abra district sits north of central Sidon toward the Beirut highway. Moon Tower Hotel and the Sea View Palace are here. A 5-minute drive or 15-minute walk to the Sea Castle.
Better for travelers with a car or who do not mind a short taxi to the old city. The rooftop pool at Moon Tower is the main advantage in summer months.

Crusader Heritage
Sidon has two Crusader fortifications: the Sea Castle on its island causeway and the St. Louis Castle inland near the souk. The soap museum documents 3,000 years of Phoenician and Arab trade history. The old covered market is one of the most intact in Lebanon.
Seafood on the Corniche
The best meal in Sidon is fresh fish at a Corniche restaurant at sunset. Choose one with no English signage and a chalkboard menu. Expect to pay $20-30 per person for whole grilled fish with mezze. The fishing boats you see moored are the source of what is on your plate.
Cheap Southern Lebanon Base
Sidon Youth Hostel at $45-70/night is one of the cheapest places in Lebanon to sleep legally and cleanly. Falafel from the souk costs $1-2. Shared taxi to Tyre is $2. You can do a full day of history and good food for under $30 total, which is impressive anywhere in the eastern Mediterranean.
Old Souk Exploration
The covered souk around Khan El Franj is the most authentic traditional market experience in South Lebanon. It sells spices, gold, olive soap bars, fresh produce, and handmade goods. Arrive on a Thursday morning when activity peaks. Dress modestly and leave the camera bag for the second visit.
Sunset at the Sea Castle
The view from the Sea Castle tower at sunset with the old harbor below and the Mediterranean stretching west is one of the quieter and more beautiful moments South Lebanon offers. Entry is $2-3. Pair with a Corniche dinner afterward at Al Fanar or the adjacent seafood stretch.
Day Trip from Beirut
Sidon and nearby Tyre make a solid 2-site day trip from Beirut for families. Shared taxi from Cola roundabout to Sidon costs $2 and takes 45 minutes. Sea Castle, old souk, soap museum, then taxi 40km further south to Tyre for the Roman ruins. Back in Beirut by 6pm.
