Walking Kingsway: Maseru's Main Street
Kingsway runs the length of the CBD from the Maseru Bridge border post to the Basotho Hat craft market. The 2km walk takes about 25 minutes at a relaxed pace.
Start at the Standard Lesotho Bank building heading east. Pass the post office, then Lancer's Inn on your left. The LNDC Centre has decent coffee. Keep going until you hit the roundabout with the Basotho Hat, a conical building modeled after the traditional mokorotlo hat.
The craft market around the hat sells wool blankets (M300 to M800), grass hats (M50 to M150), and beadwork. Prices are fair compared to hotel gift shops.
Day Trip to Thaba Bosiu
The fortress mountain of Thaba Bosiu, 24km east of Maseru, is where King Moshoeshoe I defended the Basotho nation. The cultural village at the base explains the history.
The climb takes about 40 minutes up a well-marked path. It is not steep but wear proper shoes. At the top, you get 360 degree views of the Caledon River valley and the sandstone cliffs.
Combine this with a stop at Ha Kome Cave Houses, 50km further east. San people and later Basotho families lived in these cave shelters. Entry is M30. Allow a full day for both sites.
The Cathedral Area and Roma Valley
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Victories on Kingsway is worth 20 minutes. Built in 1905, the stone walls and stained glass are unexpectedly impressive for the region.
Roma, 35km southeast, has the National University of Lesotho campus with views of sandstone cliffs. The drive passes through small villages and rolling grasslands. A taxi costs M250 one way.
The trading posts along the Roma road sell local blankets and crafts at lower prices than Maseru.
Border Crossing to Ladybrand
The Maseru Bridge crossing is open 24 hours. Walking across takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on queues. Drive across and expect 20 to 45 minutes at peak times, especially Friday afternoons.
Ladybrand, 18km into South Africa, has better supermarkets, a Wimpy, and a Spur. Many Maseru expats do weekly grocery runs here.
You need a valid passport. Multiple entry visas let you cross back and forth without hassle. Keep your Lesotho entry stamp visible.
Nightlife and Evening Options
Maseru is not a nightlife city. Your best bet is the bar at Lancer's Inn on Kingsway, which gets a mixed crowd of locals and expats. Drinks run M30 to M80.
Maseru Sun's bar area has a slightly more upscale feel. The attached casino is dated but open late if you need entertainment after 10pm.
For live music, check if anything is on at the Alliance Francaise on Kingsway. They occasionally host local musicians and cultural events. Otherwise, stick to your hotel bar.
Practical Tips for Getting Around
Maseru has no Uber. Use hotel taxis or the ones parked outside Pioneer Mall. Agree on the fare before getting in. CBD trips cost M30 to M50. Airport runs cost M200 to M300.
Minibus taxis run along Kingsway and Main South Road for M5 to M10 per trip. They are packed but functional. Look for the ones with blue stripes heading to your direction.
If you are driving, park at Pioneer Mall or the LNDC Centre. Street parking on Kingsway is available but watch your belongings in the car.

Lancers Gap sits on the hillside east of the CBD, about 10 minutes by car. The elevation gives you mountain views that the CBD hotels cannot match.
Mostly lodge-style accommodation with gardens. Quieter, but you will need a taxi to reach restaurants and shops on Kingsway.

Cathedral Area guesthouses start at M600 per night. Eat at the street vendors near Pioneer Mall for M25 to M40 meals. Minibus taxis cost M5 to M10 anywhere along Kingsway. Cross to Ladybrand for cheaper groceries and supplies if staying more than 3 nights.
Beach
No beaches here. Lesotho is landlocked and mountainous. The closest thing is the Caledon River, which is not swimmable. If you want water, drive 3 hours to Katse Dam for reservoir views. This is a highland destination, full stop.
