Stadtle: The Heart of Vaduz
Stadtle is the 600-meter pedestrian promenade that runs through Vaduz center. Hotels, museums, restaurants, the tourist office, and the Liechtenstein Center are all on it or immediately adjacent. Hotel Engel and Hotel Vaduzerhof anchor the commercial section.
Start any Vaduz visit at the tourist office for the stamp (3 CHF) and buy a local wine or two to take home. Walk north to the Kunstmuseum (modern art, excellent permanent collection) and south to the National Museum for Liechtenstein's history from Roman times forward.
Vaduz Castle Hill Walk
The walk from the north end of Stadtle up to Vaduz Castle takes 20-25 minutes on a paved path through vineyard terraces. The castle is closed to the public but the views from the hill over the Rhine Valley, Vaduz below, and the Austrian Alps east are the best panorama in Liechtenstein.
The Prince's Hofkellerei vineyard below the castle produces wine sold at the Liechtenstein Center. August 15 (National Day) is the one day the castle grounds open to the public, with fireworks and the Prince hosting the nation.
Rhine Valley Cycling
The flat Rhine Valley floor offers excellent cycling between Switzerland and Austria through Liechtenstein. The main path follows the Rhine river and can be ridden end-to-end in 2-3 hours at a leisurely pace. Bike rental is available in Vaduz and at the Schaan bus station.
The path passes through all 11 municipalities, giving a complete cross-section of Liechtenstein in one ride. Views of the castle above Vaduz from the valley floor are among the most photogenic in the country.
Balzers and Gutenberg Castle
Balzers village at the southern tip of Liechtenstein, 8km from Vaduz, has its own medieval castle: the 12th-century Gutenberg Castle perched on a volcanic plug above the village. Unlike Vaduz Castle, you can walk the grounds and get close to the exterior.
Landhaus am Giessen in Balzers is a small family hotel often overlooked by visitors focused on Vaduz. The Rhine Valley views here, especially looking north toward the Alps, are exceptional on clear mornings.
Day Trips: Switzerland and Austria
Liechtenstein's central position makes it a natural base for day trips. The Swiss town of Maienfeld, birthplace of Heidi, is 15km south and worth a morning visit. Feldkirch in Austria is 25km north with an excellent medieval old town and a Friday market. Chur in Switzerland is 30km south with the oldest city in Switzerland and a well-preserved Roman grid.
The Vaduz card (available at most hotels) includes free bus travel within Liechtenstein, useful for exploring the different municipalities without a car.
Practical Notes for Vaduz
Switzerland uses CHF (Swiss Franc). Liechtenstein uses CHF too, not EUR. Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and museums. ATMs dispense CHF. Budget roughly 100-150 CHF per person per day including accommodation, food, and entry fees in Vaduz.
The country is tiny but the hiking trails require proper footwear. Day temperatures in summer reach 24-28C in the valley but drop 8-10C in the mountains. Dress in layers for any hiking day. The Furstenwanderweg long-distance trail needs 3-4 days and good boots.

Schaan village 3km north of Vaduz has the most affordable accommodation in Liechtenstein. Hotel Garni Mittelpunkt is here, with Bus 11 running every 30 minutes to Vaduz Stadtle.
Better for budget travelers or those with a car. The village itself is pleasant and the bus connection makes Vaduz fully accessible without the Vaduz price premium.
