Trakai Island Castle
The Gothic red brick castle on its island in Lake Galve was built in the 14th and 15th centuries as the seat of the Lithuanian Grand Duchy. Restored in the Soviet era, it now houses a museum of medieval Lithuanian history. Entry costs 12-16 EUR and the visit takes 1-2 hours.
The most photogenic view is from the footbridge at dawn or dusk when the castle reflects perfectly in the still water. The 90-meter footbridge gets crowded from 10am to 4pm in summer. Arrive before 9:30am or after 5pm for the best experience.
Karaimu Street and Karaite Heritage
Karaimu Street is the historic quarter of Trakai, lined with traditional wooden Karaite houses with three windows facing the street. This is where Lithuania's tiny Karaite community has lived since the 14th century. Several restaurants here serve kibinai pastries and traditional Karaite food.
The Karaite Ethnographic Museum on the street is small but informative about this rare community. Kibinine restaurant is the most established for food. Walk the full length of Karaimu Street in 20 minutes and you will have seen the essential heritage quarter.
Lake Galve Water Activities
Lake Galve is clean, shallow in places, and protected from motor boats, making it ideal for non-motorized water activities. Rowboat rental at the castle jetty runs 8-15 EUR/hour. The best route is to row around the castle island for a complete view of all four towers from the water.
Kayak tours from the hotel jetties cover the wider lake system connecting several of Trakai's 200 lakes. Full-day kayak tours can be arranged through Hotel Galve or Trasalis for 40-60 EUR per person including guide.
Spa and Active Stays at Outer Lakes
Trasalis Spa and Sport Club sits on the quieter Lake Totoriské 2km from the main castle area. The indoor pool, multiple sauna suites, and tennis courts make it the main wellness destination in the Trakai area. Best for families or groups combining wellness with sightseeing.
Dominium Resort on the forested Aukstadvaris road offers a quieter, more secluded version of the same concept. Both are car-accessible from central Trakai in 5-10 minutes. If you are visiting purely for the castle, stay central; these outer resorts are for travelers who want more than one day in the area.
Day Trip Options from Trakai
Kernavé, 30km north of Trakai, is a UNESCO World Heritage site with Iron Age hill forts above the Neris River. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Baltic states and takes 2-3 hours to explore properly. Drive there in 35 minutes from Trakai.
Vilnius is 28km east and fully accessible by train in 30 minutes. The Old Town with its Baroque architecture, Gates of Dawn, and Uzupis Republic quarter can easily fill a full day. Trakai works well as a serene base from which to explore the Lithuanian capital.
Practical Notes for Trakai
The town is tiny and walkable end-to-end in 25 minutes. Most restaurants and guesthouses cluster on Karaimu Street and the peninsula road toward the castle. The train station is a 10-minute walk from the castle footbridge.
Summer weekends from late June to August are the most crowded. Tuesday to Thursday visits are noticeably quieter. Food prices at castle-adjacent restaurants run 15-25 EUR per person for lunch. Kibinai from Karaimu Street restaurants are both cheaper and better.

Karaite Heritage
Karaimu Street preserves one of the last Karaite communities in the world. The wooden kenesas with their distinctive three windows are found nowhere else in Lithuania. Eat kibinai pastries at Kibinine restaurant ($3-5 per piece) and spend 30 minutes at the Karaite Ethnographic Museum for the full context.
Lake Activities and Castle

Summer (Jun-Aug)
Warm weather and long days make summer the best time for lake activities and castle visits. July weekends are the most crowded with Lithuanian families from Vilnius. Weekday visits are significantly better. Book any summer accommodation 4-6 weeks ahead. Boat rentals operate from May to September.
Spring (Apr-May)
Spring brings green lakeside vegetation and very few tourists. The castle is uncrowded before the summer rush. Cooler temperatures require a jacket but the morning light on the lake and castle is exceptional. Prices are 25-30% lower than summer peak.
Autumn (Sep-Oct)
September is the best month for photography: warm light, autumn colors starting around the lake edges, and crowds thinning after summer. October foliage reflects beautifully in the lake. The castle and museum are uncrowded. The best all-round value month is September.
Winter (Nov-Mar)
When Lake Galve freezes, usually January to February, the walk across the ice to the castle island is one of the more unusual experiences in Lithuanian tourism. Ice fishing is also practiced on the outer lakes. Some restaurants close. The castle stays open year-round. Cold but genuinely atmospheric.

Arrive before 9:30am to avoid crowds
The castle footbridge gets packed from 10am to 4pm on summer weekends. Day-trip groups from Vilnius arrive around 10-11am. Go to the footbridge at 8:30am when the gate opens for the best light, best reflections, and zero crowds. The last 30 minutes before closing (around 7pm in summer) is another quiet window.
Eat kibinai on Karaimu Street, not near the castle
Restaurants within 50 meters of the castle entrance charge tourist prices for average kibinai. Walk 10 minutes to Karaimu Street where Kibinine restaurant and its neighbors serve the real thing at half the price. A portion of 2-3 kibinai with soup costs 6-10 EUR and is a genuinely filling lunch.
Rent a rowboat for the castle circumnavigation
The best way to see the castle is from a rowboat on the water. Rent one at the jetty near the footbridge for 8-15 EUR/hour. Row a complete circle around the island for views of all four towers that no land-based viewpoint gives you. 45 minutes is enough for the full circuit including some drifting time.
Train from Vilnius is faster and cheaper than bus
The train from Vilnius Central takes 30 minutes and costs 1.70 EUR, running every 30-60 minutes. The station in Trakai is a 10-minute walk from the castle. The bus is slower and less frequent. For day-trippers, first train out (around 7am on weekdays) gets you there before any other tourist groups.
Book Apvalaus Stalo Klubas 2-3 weeks ahead
This small boutique property on the waterfront is consistently the best-reviewed accommodation in Trakai and books out fast on weekends. Visit Kernavé for Iron Age context
Kernavé UNESCO site is 30km north of Trakai (35 minutes by car). Five hill forts above the Neris River were used from 10,000 BC through the medieval period. The open-air museum at the base has artifacts from excavations. Combine with Trakai for a 2-site Lithuanian heritage day trip from Vilnius.
