Taipa Village: The Non-Casino Macau
Taipa Village is where you find the Macau that existed before the casino boom. The Portuguese colonial houses on Avenida de Carlos Eugénio, painted in yellow and green, date from 1921. The Taipa Houses Museum documents Macanese family life in the 1920s with original furniture and photographs.
Rua do Cunha, the food lane, runs parallel with the best concentration of egg tart shops, pork jerky stalls, and almond cookie sellers in Macau. Allow 3-4 hours for the village including lunch at one of the local Macanese restaurants. Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning for minimum crowds.
The Cotai Strip: Resort City
The Cotai Strip is built on reclaimed land between Taipa and Coloane, housing the world's largest concentration of integrated casino resorts. The Venetian, Parisian, Four Seasons, Galaxy, and Cotai Central towers connect via air-conditioned walkways, making it possible to walk between all of them without going outside.
If you are staying on Cotai, your hotel choice determines which walkway network you have the easiest access to. Parisian guests walk directly to the Venetian and Four Seasons. Sheraton guests access the Cotai Central network which connects to the Holiday Inn Express.
Food at the Venetian and Beyond
The Venetian's food court on level 2 serves one of the better dim sum collections in Macau outside dedicated dim sum restaurants. Lotus Palace dim sum is the most accessible option at MOP 50-80 per person. The Grand Canal shopping area has additional chain restaurants.
For serious food, leave the casino and walk to Taipa Village. A Petisqueira on Rua de Carlos Eugénio serves Macanese African chicken that represents the territory's distinct Portuguese-Asian fusion cuisine. Reserve a table for dinner as it fills quickly.
Cotai Light Shows and Free Entertainment
The light show on the Parisian's Eiffel Tower replica runs nightly at set intervals and is free to watch from the Cotai Strip boulevard. The Galaxy casino has an exterior water curtain show at regular intervals. The House of Dancing Water at City of Dreams (tickets from MOP 580) is the most elaborate live show in Asia.
All of this is accessible without spending a cent in a casino. The Cotai Strip at night is visually extraordinary and tourists frequently comment that just walking the boulevard feels like a full evening.
Getting Around Taipa
Free shuttles from every major resort connect to the Taipa Ferry Terminal, airport, and Macau peninsula every 15-30 minutes. Most Cotai hotels provide free bicycles for guest use on the flat Cotai reclaimed land area.
Taxis between Taipa Village and the Cotai Strip cost MOP 20-30 and take 5-8 minutes. The light rail transit (LRT) opened in 2019 connecting Taipa Ferry Terminal to the Cotai Strip stations.
Practical Notes for Taipa
Macau uses the Macanese Pataca (MOP). HKD is accepted almost everywhere at near parity. Most casinos have 24-hour ATMs dispensing both HKD and MOP.
Weekends see visitation surge from Hong Kong and mainland China. Prices for everything (hotels, food, taxis) are 30-50% higher on Friday and Saturday nights. If you have flexibility, Monday to Thursday visits are meaningfully cheaper and less crowded.
